ATA's Winter Schedule Changes

Thu Jul 14, 2005 4:53 am

ATA is publishing our winter schedule Sunday, and sending more traffic back to Florida.

On October 15th we're adding
• A second MDW-RSW

On October 29th we're adding several flights including
• A new flight to MDW-MCO, twice a day
• A new flight to MDWMIA, twice a day
• A new flight to MDW-SRQ

On December 13th we're adding several flights
• A third MDW-MIA
• A third MDW-RSW
• A second MDW-SRQ
• A third MDW-SRQ on Saturdays
• A second MDWCUN on Saturdays

All of this is designed to take advantage of Florida's seasonality. We'll have 10 daily trips from Chicago to Florida for the winter. Overall Midway departures will increase from 48 per day to 54 per day. Some MDW business markets will drop one trip a day for the winter.

Yahoo!

I travel between Miami and Chicago very often, since I split my living between downtown Miami and Hyde Park, and Midway was such an easy airport for me. Lately I have switched my flying to AA on MIA-ORD, and while I enjoy all the AAdvantage miles I've been earning, I perfer ATA for the simple convience of getting me non-stop between Miami and Midway.

I hope it is year-round.

It seems as though ATA has lowered it's profile quite a bit. In Chicago at least. You don't see the print ads or hear the radio & TV ads as much this year.
ATA was (and is) the best for Chicagoans going to FL. I personally was going to either PIE or SRQ from MDW. I just wish their schedule was the same in summer. After all , 'the season' is when you DON"T want to be in Florida.

unfortunately that has to do with them stopping local advertising because they were going to transfer assets to FL. When that didn't happen they didn't have the money to tell the local market that they are still at MDW. They are working on that but it's still a very steep uphill battle. A lot of people in Chicago don't know ATA is still at MDW.

Well this is suprising, I was sure they were going to drop SRQ like a bad habit. Instead they have 15 flights a week starting mid December. Fantastic. I also wish they stayed year round. Now if I can get JetBlue into SRQ and AirTran to fly non-stop to PHL and LGA. Hey Mike I would much rather be in SRQ "in season" then in CMH at the same time. Winters suck!

I wonder if the MIA flights will be WN codeshare flights. It wouldn't shock me. ATA will be the only LCC in South Florida that flies to MIA and not FLL, and I'm sure it has to do with Southwest.

i'd agree that the SW codeshare would help with the Miami flights. then again i think ATA has flirted off on and on with Miami in the past, coming and going a couple of times. maybe with the code share, this time things will be solid.

it is great to see them add cities and routes again.

They served Miami in the mid-1990s, IIRC, for a short time. They back in November 2001, lasted through January 2005. They actually did really well in Miami, and carried nearly 40% of the daily O&D between Miami and Chicago, almost as much as AA. I was surprised they cut the flight back in January, but it probably had to do with the high costs of operating to MIA.

interesting with the increases in MDW-RSW... I guess I need to re-think my predictions for WN @ RSW!

Fort Myers has always been a very strong performing station for ATA, so I think that probably has something to do with. Also, Fort Myers traffic is, in general, stronger yielding than TPA/MCO.

Airtan also serves MIA. I think it is smart to add back MIA before JetBlue get there, with the code share with WN, this should actually do well. It is great to see ATA add more scheduled service.

airTran does serve MIA, but they have a bigger operation at FLL. ATA will be the only LCC serving MIA while not serving FLL.

It is a more expensive place to vacation, and, in addition to families, caters to wealthier demographics with destinations like Marco Island and Sannibel Island. You also have less airlines than TPA/MCO and the high-yielding traffic from Naples.

I would not be surprised AT ALL to see MIA become WN codeshare. They need to find a way to tap the MIA codeshare to NE cities (maybe offer a MIA-BWI flight - that would be great!).

It's bookable. Here is the MIA sched. All the MIA flights will be 738s  Smile. Hopefully that means $35 upgrades to business. The MCO flights will also be 738s. At RSW, the two new flights will be 733s. At SRQ, one 738 and one 733. I also noticed the 733s going onto BOS-MDW.

TZ 4822 MDW 0640-1032 MIA 73H Daily (eff. 29Oct05)
TZ 4824 MDW 1110-1509 MIA 73H Daily (eff. 29Oct05)
TZ 4828 MDW 1430-1831 MIA 73H Daily (eff. 13Dec05)

TZ 4821 MIA 1126-1333 MDW 73H Daily (eff. 29Oct05)
TZ 4827 MIA 1601-1813 MDW 73H Daily (eff. 29Oct05)
TZ 4825 MIA 1930-2158 MDW 73H Daily (eff. 13Dec05)

I'm very happy about the MIA schedule. I'll become a very frequent flyer on TZ 4828 and TZ 4827!

How many daily flights was TZ running MDW-MIA in 2003 and 2004? I feel like it was around 4 738s, but that might be wrong. I'm sure Mark knows...

ATA had 2 MDW-MIA and 1 MDW-IND-MIA flight in Dec 2003. They have gone between 2 and 3 flights over the years. It seems like they may have to add more if it has the SWA code share to feed them. SWA adds ~30% to the ATA passenger load currently. Who knows, maybe they will add the MIA-SJU-MIA flight again.

In terms of non-stops, it was never more than 2x daily MIA-MDW.

It was launched with 2x daily MDW-MIA-SJU in November 2001. The SJU flights ended, IIRC, at the end of October 2002. From December 2003-April 2004, they added a daily MIA-IND-MDW flight. It was set to resume in October 2004, but never did.

I think if the codeshare is really successfuly, there is a long-shot chance of seeing MIA-PHX to connect with WN flights out west and the Hawai'i flights, like ATA has done with DEN. Underserved market with only 1x daily service on HP.

Why do you say that? What makes you think they will pull completely out of IND? I think it will remain a small number of flights but TZ will remain in IND IMHO.

I say that because they have cut down to 4 flights daily and they are trying to sell off the travel club. Also when you go to their ticket counter it is as if the thing was abandoned. The remaining routes are in competition with WN, FL (in part) and NW. I also haven't seen a single TZ ad in ages. Their actions have stated emphatically that there is no longer a commitment to IND. FL's recent expansion is making TZ's service even more obsolete. I am sure I am not the only one that remembers the games they played with the city before pulling out early this year. Just my opinion.

That would be great, never thought of that possibilityit could be even MIA-LAS oe MIA-LAX if the 737-800 does Hawaii service as well (just speculation).
