CO Puts DEL On Sale...

Fri Jul 15, 2005 8:18 am

http://www.continental.com/specials/offers/delhi.asp?

For the first month (departure) and until Christmas (return), the new EWR-DEL flight beginning Nov 1 is on "sale" for $998 roundtrip from EWR, slightly more from other cities.

Is that a good price? It's $100 more than the initial China route sale of $888.

its standard (average) price...many people travel to India during winter because the weather and climate is quite nice..during the summer, its get EXTREMELY hot..

I think most fares cost around $1,000-$1,200...

$888 is a VERY lucky number in Asian cultures such as China. The number 8 is highly regarded. That's probably the reason that "sale" fare is set there. For India, I'm sure the number was actually chosen for a reason other then cultural relevence... like market/economic research.

It's not probably why the fare was 888. It is. CO said so. They made a big deal out of it, and said it worked, as their flights were full from day 1 this summer.

But I didn't ask about this.

I asked if $1000 was a good fare for NY to DEL? I've never flown it, so don't know. But feels kind of expensive to me, even for a non-stop, considering the competition on this route relative to the lesser competition to China.

$1,000 for India in the winter is a bargain. Passengers frequently pay upwards of $1,500-$1,700 for a coach seat during this period.

Then it really is a sale. Not that every seat will be $998, but still, that's a 50% savings.

No wonder there is a push to triple capacity in the India-US market, if fares are that high in peak season.

Its a great deal plus the cheaper fares in the winter tends to be on, how to put it, non traditional airlines like Aeroflot (but even they charge like $1250 with LH et all $1500+). Interesting that they have the return before XMas. The real peak is return after that. So it looks like CO is confident of riding the Dec-Feb high season.

I really hope Jet gets two of EK's A345 soon. EWR-BOM nonstop, now that flight would show what can be earned through a nonstop flight to India. I don't even think Jet will need a fare sale on that flight.

A fare sale is rather typical procedure on a new route - especially where the airline, in this case CO, is entering an entirely new market such as India. Also, the sudden increase in services to India must be an issue, Jet is also opening the EWR route (via BRU) and Air India is increasing services - and the recent annoucement by AA is the latest.

CO will do well here - nonstop service from the NYC area and one stop service from most US cities to India will be popular with both US and Indian pax travelling for business or leisure. CO amazed everyone with their success on the EWR-TLV route, look for the same on EWR-DEL.

of course.. max below 10 degrees (50 Fahrenheit) in Delhi without any heater, along with wet air and fog can be an enjoyful experience... The people are only looking for this  Silly

fully agree!! who in right mind would like to land in DEL in May/June. For those unfamiliar, most international flights land at mid-night, and hot air at that time feels as if somebody has pointed hair-dryer on your face. Imagine how afternoon would be??

Get your jokes right, Aseem!!

It would be American Airlines that would do DFW-MAA.

or maybe AI?? Big grin (9" and AA are rather out of this, as they are business-oriented - so the only possible one would be AI with a scissor strategy)
