Plattsburgh Air Travel To Take Off

Plattsburgh, New York - July 13, 2005

Air travel to Plattsburgh could soon be taking off. Wednesday night, the Clinton County Legislature signed off on plans for a new airport at the old air base. Plans call for a $7.5 million terminal to be built along the flight line that once accommodated Air Force planes. The initial construction will be about 30,000 square feet, with plenty of room to grow.

"While it won't be a Taj Mahal, it will be nicely done," explains Clinton County legislator James Langley. "It will be pleasing and expandable to the needs of what we will need in the future."

The small regional carrier Commutair is the only airline operating out of the existing county airport, but officials hope the new larger facility will one day accommodate a major discount airline, like Southwest or JetBlue.

Ground breaking on the new airport is expected to take place August 15th. Construction is expected to take about 18 months.

Good news for my northern NY bretheren. There's a big college there, and the only way in or out is to drive. jetBlue and WN may be a bit ambitious, though. It's a small community for mainline jets, probably even for the ERJ-190.

And also BTV, an established airport, is just a 45 minute-or-so drive away.

I can see Mesaba flights out of DTW as well as other airline express routes from NYC. During the summer season I'm sure the area can support RJ flights as Plattsburgh is a gateway to the upper NY recreation areas.

While the new airport sounds great, I wouldn't get my hopes up too much.

PLB currently has about 6.5 enplanements a day, and would have lost service altogether several years ago if it weren't for the EAS subsidies.
I'm the expert on here on two things, neither of which I care about much anymore.

This is insane.

Unless they intend to use Plattsburgh as a low-cost alternative to Montreal.

Another government boondoggle. They need a new terminal there like they do at Iron Mountain, MI

That's too close from YUL, but some flights could be interesting, may be US flights or CO to EWR.

Won't be, PAX going to Montral don't want the American customs and seems to be a bit far. May be for those going in Sherbrooke ... but that's a smaller market ...
To any North American carrier, send us a regular flight in MRS !!!!!

Oh good for Plattsburgh and Clinton County  Smile I still remember the days about a dozen years back when the bombshell hit that they were shutting PAFB down, leaving basically the Georgia Pacific paper mill guys as the town's main employe, followed by SUNY Plattsburgh to some extent as well. And then after the Canadian-to-U.S. dollar exchange rate fell significantly only a few years later then a huge amount of the cross-border shopping trade of course dropped off along with it.

So after many years of sort of struggling along --especially with the Clinton County airport, and especially in the first few years after 9/11 -- it's good to see them demonstrably express optimism with a project like this. Teamed up with some other encouraging signs for the town alongside:

Burlington is a short boat-ride away...attempts to develop a major facility at PLB would appear redundant. The population base surrounding BTV and PLB areas does not warrant a second competing airport to BTV, IMHO. For kicks, a few summers ago, I took the Lake Champlain Ferry from Grand Isle, VT to Plattsburgh and flew Commutair's 15 minute flight from PLB to BTV and back...a nice flight across Lake Champlain.
