That is a dramatic strike and will leave a lot of people stranded! What is the strike regarding and how much is it going to cost NZ?

All is not knowen but NZ said in their full page newspaper article that NZ can not do what FARSA is demanding because it would mean a rise in long haul airfares.

TG992 can fill you in on the details. It isn't all about money either. I won't say any more than that at this point.

An unfortunate incident as NZ may loose a bit of business as a result. But, the FAs do work hard and I guess they have to do what they have to do.

One of the biggest issues is crewing levels on the new 772.

With 313 seats and 3 classes, NZ have elected to carry just 10 cabin crew, who will be operating flights up to 13 hours. If they succeed in their plan to shift the role of the Inflight Service Director to an strictly onboard managerial role, that means 9 cabin crew to provide inflight service to those passengers. This compares to other airlines who carry at LEAST 11, usually 12-13.

The union simply believe that's not enough. The NZ crew are already used to working hard, carrying only 13-14 crew on our 744 flights of up to 13 hours, which is up to 5 less than our competitors, and working hard isn't the issue - providing inflight service at a high level to passengers requires enough crew to do it!

that means 9 cabin crew to provide inflight service

What is the minimum number of FAs that have to be on board the plane for it to legally operate?

Quoting NZ747 (Reply 10):
what will the ISD do exactly

The ISD is in charge of the entire cabin, and is next in command after the flight crew

The proposed new role for the ISD is more of a 'flight manager' role, similar to QF and CX for example. Rather than take part in the inflight service, the ISD will be directing it. They will also be involved in a 'PR' type role with the passengers, circulating the cabins, talking to them, dealing with any onward travel issues by means of an uplink to the reservations system, etc.

The ISD will also have more of a workload on the ground - they will each be placed in charge of a group of flight attendants and will be responsible for coaching them, monitoring their sick leave, any performance issues, etc.

It should be noted that the unions are challenging this all, as NZ claims the role is so different that all ISDs must reapply for the job. The union takes an opposing view. I think it's best I don't comment on my views on the subject.

Lesley did a fantastic job while she was SVP Customer Services at NZ/AN, and I am sure this is precisely why QF snapped her up.

Just heard on the news that NZ and the FAs have agreed to go back to the table. The lady in charge of the FAs has said that the reason for all this is cause of:
1. Meals
2. Crew levels on B772
3. Leave

The check-in for NZ looked like a ghost town on the news.

This is the bit that gets on my wick. What a load of s***. Most ISD's are bloody good at their job, and haven't got there by mucking around. I think the company are trying to teach them how to suck eggs.

That's very true, that said there are still a few I've come across that are just hanging out for the retirement perks... I just hope it's those ones that are forced out rather than the ones that still enjoy their job & serving to the best of their ability. Probably it is the company's way of 'cutting back' without having to pay out for redundancies - I guess it's all part of big business practise.

It is an area to tread carefully for NZ.

Long haul cabin crew need to be young with the exception of the ISD, 20-30yrs old max. People don't want to be served by somebody thats 45. It's a tough reality and unfare and cuts across age discrimination laws for sure. Western airlines have an unlevel playing field against Asian airlines in that respect. You have to move away from the idea of it being a career but rather something you do for 3-4 years when your young.
Name your long haul aircraft after cabin crew on a 3 month rotating basis so that instead of having a 744 called Kaikoura or Dunedin it's called for example
Kerri-Anne Smith with her name near the nose of the plane on a 1-2m long removable decal (name changed every 3months). Customers love the idea of companies that honour their staff. So that your maybe a young 20 something F/A working on a Long haul flight and you know that a 744 sitting on the tarmac at SFO is named after you.

Came back from SIN this morning and I noted the the NZ flight from SIN-AKL was cancelled. Also, I saw 5 NZ 744s on the tarmac in AKL. This was a weird sight as we dont usually see more than 2 or 3 and I presume it has to do with the strike.

Please explain as your post has left me confused.

I don't care how old the FA's are so long as they smile and make me feel like I belong on that aircraft. Historically Air NZ have done this very well.

Richard!
Keep off the drugs PLEASEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!

Why is it not possible to have a career as a flight attendant.
What does age have anything to do with it? So long as the cabin crew is able to perform his/her duties to the best of their abilities, then there really is no issue what so ever.
Does your job have an expiration age? Would you like to be shown the door because God forbid you hit the 30 year old mark?

Some people would actually prefer to be served by mature, professionals and not ditzy 20 something crew that could care less of about their role on board since like you put it " will be out in 2-3 years max"

FLY2CHC:
JEJEJEJE Great job jejejejejeje, Are you on the same stuff that Richard is on?
Have you seen what morale is like at QF?
Probably not. NZ crew where the first ones to tell QF crew "yupiiiii the wicked witch has gone, God help you guys in Australia!"

Richard, are you serious?

I fly a lot both domestically and internationally on DJ, QF, BA, SQ and NZ. As a fare paying passenger and non airline employee I couldn't give a rats &*^% what the age, race or sex of the FAs is. All I expect from the crew is 1. Polite 2. Friendly 3. Professional and competent 4. Have a sense of humor 5. Don't think they're better then the people they're looking after. None of this is age dependent, rather comes down to a persons personality, attitude and maturity.

Quite often you will see 3 at the terminal (NZ1, 5 and 7), and up to 3 in the hangar, depending on the day etc.

Putting an employees name to an aircraft is a silly idea. Giving them names of cities/towns like on the 744 fleet is much better, as pax are more inclined to remember the name, and associate it with the place when they visit etc.

Sorry guys, I know I'm going to upset a few ppl here by saying this, but Richard is absolutely right!!!!!

It is the cold harsh and very unfair truth, but, the likes of SQ, Jetblue and Virgin Atlantic are a tribute to this. And for those of you who thing being 20something is all about being 'ditzy' how old was Einstein when he unleashed the power of the Atom? I know a lot of them may be bombed off their head on Ecstasy, but we're not all like that.

Now nobody ever complains about Virgin Atlantic having slack ass, or stuck up crew do they? The problem is, no matter what ppl perceive as fair or just, the public, who vote with their purse strings, feel otherwise. And it isn't that it isn't possible for older F/A's to give good service.... It is just that on average, as ppl age, they don't have the same kind of energy they used to, and good service requires a hell of a lot of energy.

As for the legal requirement, NZ is only required to have 6 F/A's on the 777 provided they keep it configured below 300 seats. QF would be required to have 9, as Australian law requires more FA's than the rest of the world.

I think you're going to find that the old airlines aren't going to off new positions as permanent employment. I suspect we are going to see 3 or 5 year contracts instead. At most it will cost a few thousand dollars to train a F/A, and Jetblue is showing this model is cost effective. As is Emirates.

It's called running a business in an extremely competitive, cost-sensitive, industry. Remember, she used to be crew herself. I'm not dissing cabin crew - the ones I dealt with professionally at NZ were extremely rational and level headed.

NZ cabin crew do a great job from what hear. I would guess it is one of the toughest jobs around. The F/A's case is probably totally justified in terms on work output, experience etc.

Unfortunately if your a 40-65yo long haul traveller they are more comfortable being served by young people and sadly hot looking young people of the opposite sex. It's terrible but what can you do.

I'm sure most (70%) guys prefer to be served by a hot young woman, not just 'old' passengers  Wink

Quoting 777ER (Reply 35):
And how much did that cost UA?

Not much, the cost of the decal and, only replaced every 10 months.
Wasn't done on the entire fleet of 586 aircraft either.

Quoting NZAA (Reply 36):
And look where they are now!

A few stickers did not put UA in the position is it now I think......

Quoting NZ1 (Reply 37):
Putting an employees name to an aircraft is a silly idea

I guess every airline has it's own ways of TRYING to improve employee relations.
