MCI Now Has Restrooms!

Sun Jul 17, 2005 8:21 am

The first restrooms in the Departure Lounges opened this week,   also included is a Snack Bar at each location.  Finally, Kansas City has fixed the most glaring problem with their Airport.

Now MCI can say that they truly are the best designed airport in the world for its' local residents.

YAY!

I took my first trip to Kansas City in February. It was surreal. There were lots of people milling around on the outside edge of the terminal arcs, sitting on the floor, etc., and although there were hundreds of comfortable chairs on the inner side - inside security - no one was sitting there.

I couldn't believe they designed an airport without restrooms inside the secure area. What a moron architect! Even before 2001, that was a dumb mistake!

Actually, the first restroom inside security was opened over a year ago. It is in Terminal A in the section that houses US and FL. The restroom is downstairs where the US express gates are. Not to be picky here.  wink

How could there only one set of restrooms in the airport? Crazy is MCI that small of an airport?

I lived in Kansas City when the "new" airport opened. The design at the time was considered ingenious since you didn't have to walk forever to get to the front of the terminal. Security was something new back then. (Oh how times have changed.) Up until just two years ago or so there was only two or three gates per security area. Therefore, it wasn't a big deal to leave the gate and come back. The design wasn't really stupid until just the past couple of years when the airport started putting more gates into each security area. I guess it just takes time to catch up with the times.

Squirrel83....We can assure you that the three terminal airport, MCI, has one than one restroom.....lol. Been there--used that! LOL
I think they mean one restroom per boarding area, which can take in two or three gates.

Speaking of hubs, it this one of the reasons all hubs have failed at MCI? Terminal design, including the restroom issue?

Yea that and poorly run airlines. The restroom addition is great, it will eliminate everyones number one complaint. It is definitley time for a mega hub..... yea right, but it might entice some carriers to expand operations (eg Southwest, Midwest)

I think for those of you who haven't used MCI that much, this may seem a like a big deal. It's great that they've used the extra money leftover from the recent renovation to install bathrooms inside the secured area. It'll be nice to not have to leave the secured area in order to use the facilities.

Truth is - security lines at MCI are usually so short (5 minutes or less, usually), that it's not such a big deal to hang out outside of the secure area to eat, drink, be merry, use the bathroom, etc. and then head into the secured area about 30 minutes before your flight. As stated before, most security checkpoints are for about 6 gates (an unscientific-off-the-top-of-my-head-average) or less.

Yes, there are peak times where security waits are a bit longer, but they seem to be rather rare. As someone who has used the airport hundreds of times over the past 10 years, I can tell you that overall, MCI is a fantastic airport...easiest to arrive in, depart from, arrive to, etc. It's a clean, modern, and properly sized operation for a city of this size.

Re: hubs: WN does use MCI as "hub" (as it uses so many other cities as "hubs"), and I imagine that people transferring from one aircraft to another will appreciate the "secure" bathrooms. YX also calls MCI a hub.

Hence the "quotation marks". Of course I (and everyone else) knows that there are no traditional hubs for WN, but people do transfer there quite a bit. WN is the largest airline (as based on arrival/departure numbers) at MCI.

Perhaps I should have called it P2P.... but I do stand behind the YX hub comment (notice that I didn't use quotation marks there!)

I still think MCI would make a great hub.. but most say it's because Kansas City lacks a big metro-city area.
