Playing Golf Beside BKK!?!

Sun Jul 17, 2005 11:38 am

If you scale this picture up it appears as if there are figures in the background amongst the trees with golf caddys and it doesnt appear as if there is any fence or boundary between them and the tarmac.

Yes, as amazing and unbelievable as it sounds, there is a golf course beside it. Actually, part of the putting green is situated between rwy 21L and 21R. Access to the golf course is only via the air force base across and hence, only the senior officers use it. Don't worry, whenever an aircraft approaches, there will be a loud siren and everyone stops swining those clubs and wait for the aircraft to land. Nevertheless, the holes of the green are placed parallel to the runway direction so there is rerally no reason for anyone to be swinging golf balls onto the runway.

Scary as it sounds, it is true...

Cheers
Ryan

Its ashame the same cannot be said for planes landing on the fairways however, as QF loved to prove some 6 years ago.

The course is open to the public!!!! I played there in August of '04 as I was just re-located to BKK from Tokyo. Green fees are 310 Thai Baht plus another 200 Baht for your caddy. Although it looks extremely close from onboard it is actually quite difficult to get the ball to the runway. In spite of my vicious slice I was hard pressed to get it anywhere near. Short of lining up a drive AT the runway I believe it would be impossible. To get a tee time I had the concierge at the Sheraton Hotel Sukhumvit make the booking. The taxi can only take you as far as the gate but a kind miltary guy gave me a ride the rest of the way on his motorbike. The course isn't spectacular but rest assured the scenery is worth it!!! Photos to follow...

That reminds me - did I see one on the approach to SIN? I think we were doing a westward landing.

I also remember seeing one on approach into 2L at SIN. I watched some kind of golf tournament on sky sports a while back that was being held in Singapore. Every few minutes a plane would come in low over the course so I guess its the same one.

You've never seen my slice...

Seriously though, some USAF bases have golf courses quite near the runways. If anyone here has ever been to Keesler in Biloxi, MS you know what I mean. Keesler's golf course plays through the approach lights, I think you could put an errant putt onto the flightline without trying too hard.

The course south of Singapore Changi Airport is Tanah Merah Country Club and it has two courses. One of the course is located under the approach of runway 02L and the other abeam of runway 02C.

As low as it seems, there is very little likelihood of any balls gaining enough height to shake hands with a landing aircraft - but it does make for a very picturesque landing.

As CDXpax said this course is open to the public. It's not exclusively for senior officers. Taking photograph at the course is prohibited though.

The name of the golf course is "Gun Tha Rat" or "Sanam Golf Thaharn Ar-Gart (Airforce Golf Course)" owned by the RTAF.
