Who Is The Woman In This Picture?

Sun Jul 17, 2005 5:41 pm

Take a close look at the woman sitting behind the FO. Who do you think she is, and what is she doing on the flight deck?

Mabye she's a deadheader. Or the Captain's mum! Although the idea of her being a competition winner seems a bit strange. After 9/11 I've never been allowed into the flight deck. Wouldn't the airline be frightened that she was Al Qaeda or the like? Just wondering  worried

A lot of airlines let F/As jumpseat. That's probably what is going on in this picture. If not an F/A, than a pilot or FO.

Gentlemen - and Ladies!!

Every beginning of the school year, I ask a logic question to my classes: "a ten year old boy is wheeled into the operating room after a tragic accident that has claimed the life of his biological father. The surgeon, however, takes one look at the boy and says, 'I can't work on this child - this is my son!!' How is this possible?"

Rarely, if ever, does any of my sutdents get the correct answer. You would not believe the outrageous jumps in illogic so many people are prepared to take while overlooking the blatantly obvious - the surgeon is a woman. Big grin

Therefore, in keeping with that spirit, I pose this question - who is to say that the woman in the picture is not a pilot herself? Surely all the men here have heard of women in the cockpit before...

I may be wrong, but in the interest of fairness, I'm going to guess that she is giving either the pilot or the co-pilot a line check.  box

She's the chef. After take-off she will prepare delicious medium-rare roasted peanuts and a mix of snacks that will make your mouth water.
She also pours a dynamite coke-over-ice.

What would be interesting is if the F/O and Captain of that flight saw this pic and claimed that there was no one on the jumpseat...let alone a creepy looking lady with glasses. Could it be....a non-reving ghost? Big grin

Sorry just by looking at that lady, I had to throw something supernatural... duck

OK, I'm sick of the issue of women in the cockpit! If they're qualified, they have every right to be there! Why is that such a hard issue for some people? Do you recognize the woman below?

You probably don't recognize her, but let me assure you she has my respect. She's a Southwest Captain, an FAA designated examiner, and has been on the US National Aerobatic Team more times than I can count off the top of my head. But here's a little more...

8 time US Women's Champion
1984 World 3rd Overall - Women
1988 World Gold Medal Unknown
2003 World Gold Medal 4 Minute Free
2004 US Nationals 2nd Overall
27,000 hrs+ logged

It was an honor to take my multi-commercial checkride with her (and pass). Debbie Rihn-Harvey has a reputation of being progressively more difficult as you apply for more advanced ratings.

There are are good/bad pilots out there of both genders, but I've seen no connection between the issues.

Enough of my rant...

As the starter of this thread I think I have the right to take issue with your ridiculous comments. I made no reference to it being a surprise that there was a woman on the flight deck, I simply asked a question about a rather funny picture showing a woman wearing a rather strange expression. So, take a chill pill and and get your head from out of your backside.

Trident2e,

The issue is not with you, or the fact you started this thread. So if you're offended, I apologize.

The issue is with the majority of those who have responded who don't even consider the possibility of an older female cockpit crew member. The other day I flew with a female captain who said she has had people refuse to board the plane with her as the captain just due to her gender. That's active discrimination, and wrong IMHO.

Take a poll of the responses, and you'll see what I mean.

I have to agree with Trident. The fact that there is a woman in the F/Os seat totally shows that this thread wasn't, isn't, and never will be intended as an insult to women or there ability to become pilots. That is unless overly sensitive people with poor reading comprehension, such as those who have made it an issue, decide to make it so.

Thats the new way for airlines to make money... Instead of having walls and curtains and galleys and toilets and closets between the flt deck and the pax cabin, they are putting an extra couple rows of money making seats. Of course before each flt they would have to ask all terrorists to leave the aircraft first, other than that it should work fine  scratchchin

Let me agree with Trident2E. When I first saw the thread and the photo I didn't think the issue was about having women as pilots or anything like that.

I too wondered who the woman could be, since she didn't look like she was familiar with being in the cockpit. That expression on her face tells it all. That look of amazement, or bewilderment.. Is she a passenger who couldn't sit in an overbooked cabin? Is she on urgent business? It's much fun to speculate. I'm sympathetic, yet jealous. What I wouldn't give to be in that cockpit with a videocam!

But since we somehow jumped to female pilots, I'll say that they're great. However, they need to design better uniforms for them that show both their authority as pilots yet reflect their pride in being women, and also improve their overall comfort while flying.

OK calm down. I think who the thread starter was referring to was the women behind the FO. We're all aware the FO is a woman and have acknowledged it: she's more than ever entitled to be there.  covereyes

It's just that it appears that the woman behind the FO is not even in some sort of uniform. She cannot be needed on the flight deck as only two crew are required for an A330.

However....depending on how long the route this aircraft is to fly, she could be a relief pilot/FO.
