Very interesting that they keep delaying this, but it always makes more sense to start new routes during peak travel periods, which, for MIA/FLL-MEX, is the summer.

I wonder why they are postponing it. It seems like the demand is there, perhaps lack of airplanes. I wish they had applied for FLL-GDL or MTY instead of MEX, but oh well.

Too bad. I have been waiting for NK to announce FLL-MEX service for some time. I guess there is too much competition in the market with plenty of flights from AA / AM to MIA.

Now, if only a Mexican airline (6A or ZE) could start flights and compete against AM and AA, that would help lower the high fares charged by AM and AA. With MX no longer flying non-stop to MIA, someone needs to incentive travel to the area. 6A has been doing it, but you have to fly MEX-MTY-MIA.

Lets see if 6A can get some B735's and take MX's route authority!!

MX tentatively plans to resume service on this route this winter, so, for now, little chance.

is FLL/MIA considered the same market for this purpose? If not, will DL and FL try for this route like they did with TPA-CUN? Also, AM used to fly FLL-MEX, but they cancelled it.
NEXT FLIGHT: FLL-ATL-HPN on FL

Interesting indeed, however I hope that NK does extensive publicity and promotes FLL as an alternative to MIA because a lot of people still don't realize that FLL is actually pretty close to Miami and are not used to hear the term "alternate" airport.

Now, will NK be using the A319 and then the A321 if demand increases or the A321 since the beginning? I really wish them luck and hope to see them soon in Mexico City.

What are you talking about? Everybody realizes this, that is why FLL is the main domestic airport in South Florida.

Aviogenex I see your point, some people when browsing the Internet for tickets or their Agency do not search for "alternate airports" so they punch in MIA and not FLL as destination, I really hope the fares go down a bit because flying to Mia onshort notice is a Rip off...

Still not shown by MX on their schedule. They don't want to loose route authority, but they don't want to loose more money serving the route...

There is always the possibility of 6A or ZE starting MEX-FLL, like the MEX-ONT flight ZE has!! Surprisingly, they have good loads on this one...

No, it is not in the schedules yet. That's why I said tentative.

MX couldn't make money with one daily flight. This is a key business market. MX needed to serve this market with at least two dailies, probably three. AA offers three flights and AM offers four dailies.

True. I remember a few years ago when the now-defunct ACES launched their BOG-FLL route [currently operated by AV] the extensive campaign here in Colombia which tried to transmit through eyes and ears how Fort Lauderdale could well be considered an alternative when going to Miami.

In every decent magazine, news paper and television channel you had to see the Flying to Miami? Try Fort Lauderdale ! advertisement. Understandable, most people really didn't consider FLL as a real alternative at that time.

Now AV, besides offering significantly lower fares on their BOG-FLL route than those of BOG-MIA, always pops-up a window when trying to book a flight to FLL.

BOG-FLL, even on the slowest travelling months of the year, can easily register an 80% load factor for AV, which goes higher up in peak periods.

I hope this service does not last long just because of the fact that NK does a terrible job in FLL with handling international arrivals.

No NK agents in customs

No NK agents in immigration

Not enough NK agents in baggage recheck

If NK wants to expand that's great but hire the people so that your customers don't suffer.

Now I agree NK needs to hire more agents. I do disagree with this statement

the several times I have come in to FLL from international destinations there are

always NK agents at customs and baggage re-check

Well on an almost daily basis there is not an agent inside customs or immigration. Now as far as baggage re-check goes I never said there was nobody there but having one agent doing tickets and throwing bags is just not enough in fact I have seen US agents helping NK since they both use the same location for re-check.

It's a difficult situation because NK has some great people that try and meet flights, help in customs, then go and do re-check but one person can't be everywhere, and I think management needs to learn this before they add more flights.

That was exactly my point. MX does not want to lose the route, but does not want to operate it at a loss.

If MX loses route authority thanks to 6A's application for the route, then 6A could start double daily MEX-MIA and be successful. After all, they already serve MIA from MTY (customers know them) and MX will not be flying 1 x week just to keep competition out, since CINTRA has to disappear by year end (no more protection between AM and MX).

I hope NK realizes they need to start serving MEX ASAP if they want to get a piece of the pie. There are many LCC projects in Mexico which could start flying TLC-MIA and hurt yields on the route.

Was there not a MEX-FLL route by AM that failed miserably some time ago?

There was. I actually believe that the loads were satisfactory, but, unsurprisingly, the higher-yielding passengers wanted to go to MIA and not FLL, so they focused on MIA instead.

It didn't "fail miserably". Loads were great, but it was expensive to maintain an FLL station, and the business passengers were sticking with MIA. They replaced it with a 4th daily MIA-MEX flight.

That has alot to do with it.. right now NK is retiring the M80's alot faster than they are getting the Airbuses. You will see the results of this in Sept and Oct when they run a much reduced sked.

For every new Airbus delivered, they are parking 2 MD's (through the end of this year anyway). I suspect that rate may slow during the 1Q06 and pick back up this time next year.

If you read the docket, NK clearly states the reason for the (additional) delay in launching this route is due to the fleet replacement...
