What's It Like On A 744?

Fri Apr 28, 2000 6:01 pm

I will be taking my first flight on a 744 in May. Actually, this is my first flight on a 747 period. I am so excited. Ever since I was a kid, I have been in awe by this plane. I have flown on the 777, DC-10, A340, and L1011 as far as my widebody experience goes. What's it like on this plane? Is it as amazing as the 777? I know that I was amazed by the wingspan on the 777 and how they arched way up high during flight. My flight will be from LAX-HKG. So, I will have about 15 hours to enjoy it. The return flight is HKG-SFO. It is with United, but I don't want an opinion of the airline, just the 744. I will have a window seat both ways. Made sure of that before I paid for the tickets.

The 744 is great airplane. The 747's have a special sentimental value to me. I used to take Air France 747's from LAX when I was young. The "feel" of the 744 isn't much different from that of other aircraft in terms of take-off and cruise. The wings are not as flexible as those of the 777. The most impressive thing about it is its history. It's just cool to look up at a 747 and say, "i've been inside one of those." Almost makes you feel like a part of history in the making   Thanks,

I just wish I could fly more small planes, I'm sick of all the 747-400's I've been on. Dont get me wrong its a great plane its just that I've been on too many of them.

Bush, your a sad, sad man.

If you felt that the 777 is roomy, then the 744 (or for that matter, any 747) will feel even more so. Other than that, you sensations will be about the same as in most of the other widebodies that you've been on (except the 340).

If you're seated behind the wing, the noise from the exhaust would seem a little louder during cruise compared with the 777. But then, you get to see all those flaps in action, especially during approach and landing, when they really hang them out!

On the other hand, the upper deck is quiet beyond belief!!!

I've flown on the 741, 742, 743 and the 744. For me, I guess I've had more than my fair share of flights on 747's, and would actually seek out alternate types to fly on. For instance, I can't wait to sample a DC9 or an F100.

Incidentally, when will you be flying? On F, C, or Y-class?

I was on a 747 from SFO to Hong Kong on Singapour Airlines. We were upstairs a nd it was really neat because you were so high you could see everything. It is odd when you are landing because you hit ground and it looks like your still in the air. If yor not on the top floor it just the same. Except take off it seems like your on the runway forever. Enjoy the new Hong Kong International Airport I was just ther, it's really great.

FLying on the upper deck of a 747-400 is an amazing experience. It is silent, plus the plane feels sooo solid. If you can, sit up there.

Unfortunately, I will be flying economy. All of my frequent flier miles are with American. Since I can stay on one airline with United, the ticket was much much cheaper than an AA/Cathay combination. If I could have been on AA/Cathay, I would have been in Business class. But, OH WELL. My seat is 47A just behind the 3rd door on the left. Should be able to get a good view of the wings, which is always entertainment during takeoff and landing. I hope it won't be too rough though. My last flight over the pacific was from NRT-DFW on American and it was rough all night. It wasn't too great. Wish it was smooth because theres nothing better than a dark, quiet, smooth, overnight flight, and seeing the sun rise in the morning.

I, like you, was very excited about my first trip on a 747. It was a United 744 from Honolulu to SFO after I couldn't get onto the flights to LAX. After years of seeing them in awe, I finally got to board a 744. I'll tell you, though, every bit of awe was gone when I got to my seat and folded myself to fit in the small space provided. By the end of the 4 hour flight, I was sore from the cramped conditions. Also, despite its monstrous size, the 744 does not feel large, presumably because of the large number of bulkheads that break the cabin into little sections. I guess there's one good thing that should come of these flights... you'll appreciate American even more when you're done, especially once they finish the "More Room Throughout Coach" initiative.

The 747-400 is an amazing aircraft. Its sheer size and power are awesome. The most incredible sensation for me was this: Sitting in coach in an British Airways 747-400 for the first time, and as the aircraft turned at the end of the runway to power up for takeoff, I was looking down the length of the cabin. Through the side windows, I could see the buildings and the runway moving as the plane turned. It seemed all the more huge, and I honestly wondered how something of that size could actually take to the air!

I love flying in the 747-400. It's a must for any airliner enthusiast!

There's nothing really special about it. It's like any other aircraft once you are in the air. As for t/o and landing, pretty amazing with the flaps and everything. I've flown in business (upper deck) with my dad before. It was great and I got to sit there for free (company paid)since I was going with my dad on the business trip.

Boeing 747-400 is the fastest climb ever! It can reach to 35,000ft in 17 minutes than B777. I flown a few times on 747-400 is a pretty good flight. Very fast cruise than 777. I flown 777 few times but it is great plane ever I had it. 777 is smooth and quiet. Amazing landing is so smooth and quiet reverse engines. 747-400 is pretty good quiet landing , too but reverse engines is a little bit louder. Both 747 and 777 are great planes, too.

On one of my two 744 flights i sat in front of the right-
wing.Man, belive me it was huge. The winglett semed to be far away. The 744 is a realy smooth plane, and it felt much more roomy than the 777 to me. One coll thing with that flight, was: We were landing in singaopre in heavy rain, and to see all the water flow over the wing was so great.

I am becoming more and more excited!!!!
I'm willing to fly to SYD next July for the wedding of an ex girlfriend of mine (Have you seen My best friend's wedding, with Julia Roberts and Cameron Diaz? Cameron is so lovely babe... -out of topic?-   ).
I've been suggested to fly SR codeshare flights:
SR 662 A321 BCN-ZRH
Although I am an Airbus fan and I am willing to fly a 340 too, I agree with Ilyushin that a 744 is “THE MUST” for any plane enthousiast. But I feel also curious about the biggest twin ever. I love huge A/Cs: the biggest twin 777, the biggest Airbus 345 (soon 346...), the biggest state-of-the-art flying thing ever 744.
I'll post a report has finally happened.

the 747-400 is much more comfier than the old and crappy 747-200 and the 400 has better interiors. I've flown on Virgin 747-400 and 200 BA's 747-400 and 200 and UAL 747-100, 200 and 400 Singapore Airlines 747-400, Ansett 747-300, 400 Qantas 747-400. I find the 400 to be much better especially with the extended upper deck.

I flew on one five years ago from Miami to Capt Town and back, that was with South African Airways. Those were my longest flights ever, 14 hours each way, but I really enjoyed the aircraft. On the flight from Cape Town to Miami, I went to the cockpit twice. The crew was friendly.
Have a nice flight.
