US Airways Not Coming Back To Grenada

Tue Jul 19, 2005 12:37 pm

Looks like US Airways has quietly pulled Grenada. They seasonally suspended their Philadelphia-Grenada service for this summer season, but it will not be resuming next winter. Anyone know more?

Well US Airways never resumed flight to Grenada after Hurricane Ivan last year in which the island was really badly damaged. The hotels in Grenada for the most part are still not really completed as most are expanding instead of just repairing. Speaking with someone in the company it was said that they are hoping to resume this winter but only after, an evaluation of the islands current capacity to handle stay over tourist. The key hotels that passengers from US Airways stayed in were all out of operation for the past year.

US Airways still has all their stationary, counters, offices in Grenada. THey have not officially pulled out as yet. Rent is still being paid...
There is something special about planes....

The lower key destinations are mainly served out of PHL because they attract a lot of O&D from PHL and the Northeast, and not much from the south outside of South Florida. There are a handful of Caribbean islands that are full of New Yorkers, Bostonians, and Miamians, and nobody else.

And that is true about the hurricane damage, totally forgot about that. AA has been hesitant on relaunching MIA-GND because of this as well, and it doesn't look like it will be happening this year.

I hope the folks in Tempe are aware of that money-losing situation. One of the many things to be nipped in the bud.

So what happens if they decide to return? It would cost more money to ship everything out then reopen the station again. It wouldn't be worth it to completely pull out.
