Air India 747 AOG At LAX

Tue Jul 19, 2005 3:14 pm

Does anyone know why VT-EVJ is on the ground at LAX?

This seems to be happening more and more often.

No idea - but I hope it's nothing serious. As it is, one of the aircraft must be busy with taking the Indian PM on his visit to the US. This will definitely mean cancellations and delays for AI - which is becoming a recurring theme this summer.

I had been to LAX yesterday, but did not see AI plane, where is it parked ? Meantime why is the AI 747 (Khajuraho/VT-ESO)ferrying the PM called Air India one ?

If it is AOG, it is likely at the United hangar, which you can see from the end of the departures loop, as United Services handles all of AI's line MX at LAX.

Great! This means a lot more late night work at FRA again. But that's ok. Just means the night shift wont get too boring after all! Or is the a/c still AOG and will depart with an entire 24h delay?

Cheers,

Correct, it's parked at the United maintenance area. It's where VT-ESO was parked for a couple of weeks after that FRA tailstrike incident.

Your correct. The aircraft is AOG due to a hydraulic shuttle valve problem. Also some maintenance phopa's by United Mgment.

That doesn't sound like it'd be too hard to fix in a hurry. Quite unlike the -ESO tailstrike circumstances.

What are "phopa's" by the way?

I'm guessing but 'phopa' = 'Faux Pas' ?

Just to clarify, the literal meaning is "false step". When you say "(insert language here) for...", the implication is that you're giving a direct translation.

To stay on topic, it's interesting that UA provides mechanical support. If/when the 777s return to LAX and need service, it will be like a homecoming of sorts, since they are former UA A/C.

Well, it's not AOG anymore. I saw "Fatehpur Sikri" rumble down the runway at around 8 pm.

I wonder if today's incoming flight from FRA was cancelled...

I don't agree with your assertion of implication. I assert that the context was one of general meaning not direct translation.

Manmohan Singh is on a 3 day visit to the US!
He should be coming back soon and so would be the aircraft.

When it comes to euphemisms like this (as opposed to singular words, e.g. "'Chien' is French for 'dog'"), the equivalent phrase is typically not a literal translation. As an example, the French phrase for "hungry as a bear" employs "wolf" instead.

My point was to provide a direct translation for clarity's sake, just so no one gets the notion that the phrase literally means "embarassing blunder" (which is not really a common euphemism anyway, somewhat enforcing the notion of a exact rendering). In any case, a closer match would be "misstep", which my Webster's Dictionary defines as "A false or wrong step; error"

Last Tuesday when I was coming back home to LAX I believe I saw that exact plane at the Tom Bradley International Terminal. So I do not know as to why the aircraft was there.
