Tunnels That Run Under Airports

Tue Jul 19, 2005 4:35 pm

Okay I started this thread a while ago but I guess it had the wrong header. So Let's try again.

Dubai recently inaugurated a tunnel that runs straight under the airport. It is quite massive reaching a length of 1.5km with 4 lanes in each direction. I passed through it last week and it was quite impressive. This tunnel has been opened for traffic recently. It runs straight under the runways of the airport.

I was what other airports in the world have tunnels open for traffic that run under them?

Heathrow - two twin lane tunnels. If you count taxiway bridges then you can include LAX and AMS that I know of.

AMS has a train tunnel under the airport. The Schiphol train station is also underground.

Hola!

Here at MAN - Wilmslow Road (can't remember the number) passes right under 27R and then a few yards later 27L. The point where the road passes under 27R can be good for spotting taxiing aircraft. Its always good to see the looks on unsuspecting drivers faces as the tootle along to be greeted by an SQ 772, MH 744, EK 333..... just a few yards over their head! Looks abit like  eek

WLG has a pedesterain tunnel that runs under the main runway. Clearly tell when something is on the runway. WLG will also have a vehicle tunnel in the next 2 years as part of the runway work

Well- not part- but all! iirc, there are 6-8 lanes of motorway, and then 2-3 lanes each side of a slip road. It's huge!

In Zurich the train tunnel to the airport station runs under the southern part of the airport. In addition there are tunnels (for the people mover and a four lane car (luggage) tunnel) which are going from the terminals to dock E underpassing runway 10-28.

In response to your question General Holmes Drive in SYD passes under RWY 34L/16R.

Have not seen the new tunnel in Dubai yet. I hear its impressive... Next time i go to Sharjah....

There is a tunnel for employees only at AMS as well. It's crossing under runway 06-24. Without the tunnel, it would take too much time to transport mainly cargopallets to the passenger aprons!

CDG has the highway under two of the runways, as well as two train tunnels for the TGV and the local RER.
ORY has a 4 lane road going under the South Terminal and part of the installations.

AMS also has this fairly new bus-tunnel that is used by the "Zuidtangent-buses". The tunnel is located between the Hoofddorp business park (Kyocera, Mc.D., etc.) and the Total gas-station at AMS.

There's a tunnel that crosses the entire MAD airport complex. Actually it's not one but two twin parallel tunnels with 2 lanes and 1 emergency lane each...6 lanes in total. The tunnel is not straight nor horizontal...yes, there are a few turns as well as sectors where it goes up and down.

It's an impressive work of engineering with a length of 2,8 kilometers and it runs under runways, aprons, taxiways and terminals.

At SEA, 188th Street runs under the south end of Rwy 16L.
There is a good place for spotting just to the west of the tunnel.
Also, ORD has taxiway overpasses that cross the terminal access road, as does JFK.

In BRU there's a tunnel under one of the runways (25L-07R) and a railway tunnel under the airport, which ends right under the terminal. This tunnel is to be extended in the next few years to the north of the airport, to improve rail connections to the north of the country.

I've just been told that the new Clyst Honiton bypass will run in a tunnel underneath the 08 end of the runway at Exeter, and eventually will link the A30 with the new terminal which is alledgedly being built on the Northside of the airlfield. Anyne who has any info on that, feel free to post it here cos I'd quite like to see the plans!

TXL has an Autobahn-tunnel under the runways. It looks quite old, just like the whole airport, to me it gives a real "cold war feeling" (don't know why, but thats my impression every time I pass the tunnel).

We've got one here at MSY that was built as a part of a runway extension (west end of runway 10/28) project back in the late 80's. After the tunnel was built, it was sealed at both ends, awaiting funds for the state/parish/city to construct the roadway network that would utilize the tunnel. To date, those funds have not materialized, and the tunnel remains sealed.

Up until our current runway 10/28 reconstruction project, every few years we'd have to perform pavement maintenance to the runway surface that passed over the tunnel. To make a long story short, the ground around the tunnel sinks, while the tunnel was built on pilings that don't sink. Consequently, a hump would develop in the runway over the tunnel, and would become more pronounced over time. We have quite a bit of video of aircraft bouncing over the tunnel. Our current runway reconstruction project should alleviate that problem.
