LH Coming To TPA?

Tue Jul 19, 2005 9:31 pm

The last issue of British magazine Aircrafts Illustrated had a feature about Florida´s Airports and their pax-volume.
In this article it was mentioned that (whoever at) TPA was in talks with LH to start service to TPA (assumingly from FRA).

Any more info about this ?
From my perspective this would be a good move (serving the Orlando area), but on the other hand, there would be (almost) no connections available from TPA on *A (but then the same is true for MIA ?).
Maybe LH will make that a non-daily flight (in initial stages) ?

P.S. There has been speculation (or even continues "confirmation from an insider") in other threads that LH was to start services to STL soon ...

Condor was already here, that didn't work, why would LH try? Most people think LH ALREADY serves TPA, there are LH signs all over the airport. Of course its just a codeshare with UA Big grin

... and route their pax through IAD, which has become infamous for delays recently !

DE (Condor) now serves RSW and MCO, IIRC ...

MIA is a much larger market than TPA. I don't see Lufthansa coming to Tampa anytime soon. They already have British Airways, who does well, and that satisfies the market. If could see Condor returning in the future, though.

I really doubt that LH will start an flight to TPA with its own metal. Perhaps they will have a codeshare with UA via IAD.

I think they already do that.

LH needs to go back to PHX. That was the best destination ever for them. Atleast hotel wise. They stayed at the Tapatio Resorts, which has numerous pools and all the goodies.

If I take this as a confirmation, we will have new LH-services to TPA and STL in the (next) future ?

Can this expansion already be seen as a move to reduce LH´s dependency on onward connections (with taking a little bit the "unsecure" future of UA into account) ? Or would it bejust a move to open up new markets ?

No doubt that I do support this opinion (as I already expressed in other threads).

With all these possible new services opening up in some future ...: Is it absolutely necessary to operate daily flights into every destination, or could a destination also live with a (say) 4 flights per week (in case loadfactors aren´t so high) ? Of course, when trying to fill the a/c with business travellers, a connection that is offered daily obviously is the best thing.
But seeing that LH currently has the A330/A343 as the smallest longhaul-a/c in its inventory it might become difficult to fill that cabin to satisfactory levels (unless LH once again leases B763´s for those routes).

...and lord knows that airlines base intercontinental longhaul service on hotel choice  Yeah sure

Anywho, like Mark, I could see a FRA nonstop returning as an LH codeshare on DE-- that's if LH still even does that (anyone?)

The LH rumor turds have been floating in the Mississippi for years. Its possible they will make an entrance into St. Louis, but I'll believe it when I see it. The most concrete evidence I've ever seen is a news report saying that LH officials visited w/ city and airport officials, thats it.

Seeing as BA considers TPA as one of their "3rd tier" routes in the US network (along with BWI and DFW), I can't see LH taking on TPA with LH metal. I could however see DE operating a 767 to the market.

Lufthansa doesnt have free planes sitting around.

It measures, with a tremendous amount of accuracy, its next most profitable incremental mission for an A333/340.

Considering the mass expansion needed for Asia and the sub-continent, I doubt you will see Lufthansa move into secondary markets like PIT/STL/TPA etc.

LH officials have also been at some other US cities (besides TPA and STL) recentley - so they're just weighing their options right now. I wouldn't plan on seeing them at STL any time soon though. The most likely candidate is somewhere they used to fly  Wink.

Lots of LH expansion in the USA rumors lately: PIT, STL and now TPA. I really dont see any of these cities happening in the near term future, but who knows. My bet would be on LH re-launching the PHX route once the HP/US merger is finalized and organized - LH could tap into the large HP/US hub at PHX at that point. The combination of O&D traffic at PHX plus connections throughout the southwest available on HP/US via PHX could make this route work the second time around.

One note in support of TPA, Florida has become a very popular destination for Germans, not only for holidays but also for second homes. And it seems, at least from whom I have spoken with, that the Germans prefer the Florida Gulf Coast when buying second homes. Europeans have participated in the Florida real estate craze that has been going on for the past few years.....and people going back and forth frequently between their primary residence in Europe and their holiday residence in Florida plus all of the associated friends, family and visitors that will also make trips to Florida does, when taken as a whole, generate a considerable amount of traffic. And, the yeilds on this type of traffic is not bad (not great, but not bad).....this is a step beyond the lowest fare holiday traffic. Is this German second home phenomeon enough to encourage LH to open a flight between TPA and FRA - I really dont know, but it must be a consideraton.

Alot of what LH will and won't do with secondary markets, such as PIT, MSY, STL, SAN, PDX etc. has to do with what the airport will do for them. IIRC, PDX gave them a pretty sweet deal as far as landing fees and other airport expenses go. With that being said, what the airport will do for LH is definitely one of the factors that could determine whether one of those secondary markets would be given a shot. Just my take on the issue.

This type of route would be perfect for the 787.

Like most Europeans, the South Florida area is the perferred area for second home purchased in numbers, though Germans do definitley perfer the Gulf Coast more than other Europeans. Their preference, though, is the Fort Myers area, which is why RSW has year-round scheduled service to Munich, Dusseldorf, and Frankfurt on LTU and Condor. The Brits perfer the Tampa Bay/Sarasota area.

I agree with that LambertMan. And I can tell you that I have little faith in LH flying down here with the way our airport works. The head of the aviation board here is a CEO of a local Fortune 500 company and I really thought once he took over that he would push hard to get some more internatonal flying, using incentives if need be. I have yet to hear of MSY offering incentives for new international service. I'm glad PDX gets it right...we sure can't when it comes to international flying!

Dropping landing fees by 69% (now appropriate, for this city  Wink) helps, but it's nothing compared to offering free fees for year(s), or the like

Maybe soon; Nagin seems to have made it a platform.
