DCA can't have airplanes bigger than a 757, which is mandated.

MDW's only restrictions are due to it's short runway, so it has restrictions, but they aren't "rules", they are operational issues.

The 757-300 is the largest aircraft that City of Chicago Department of Aviation allows at MDW. While runway length is a major factor historically dumping a widebody plane load of people into the old terminal was a bigger factor. Many airlines have asked over the years and several studies have been done for the airport on this issues. I actually worked on one of these studies. I believe that the last airline to make a request was Pan Am II in the late 1990's who wanted to operate a A300 from MDW to SJU.

Here is an interesting question:

Does anyone have a picture of the UA D10 that landed at DCA or the EA A300 that landed at MDW back in the 1980's.

A picture of either of these would be priceless.

i believe that 767s are actually permitted at DCA - and there are a couple of gates that are configured for them - but the airlines choose not to use them there.

DCA's restriction is based on wingspan. 767's were allowed at one time, but I don't know if they are now.

A UA DC-10 landed at DCA once. They parked the plane at the FBO and it departed the next morning for BWI. It's an interesting story that has been covered in this forum several times.

i think you're right contrails - one of the ops managers at dca told me about the 767 technically being allowed, but i seem to recall reading - perhaps in the A/FD - something about restrictions on wingspan and or weight. i need to look that one up.

DCA can handle aircraft up to a 767-300, no more than 2 at a time due to the wingspans though. There was a good thread on this a couple months back, I will look through and see if I can find it.

The shortness of the runways at DCA can cause probelms on a hot day. I was on a DL 738 DCA-SLC a few weeks ago that had to dump 9 passengers and 2000lbs of fuel to be able to safely take off. I think it was 99 degrees that afternoon at DCA
