Air India:The West Strikes Back

Wed Jul 20, 2005 7:17 pm

For a few years now many outsourcing back office jobs have been moving from the west to companies in India leading to heartburn in the west over the loss of jobs to Indians. The west has now struck back. Air India a wholly owned company of the govt of India a national carrier to boot has been steadily bringing in foreign Pilots to replace jobs that can be done by local pilots. Example on the B777 fleet of a total of 26 captains only 4 are Indian while a whopping 22 are a mix of brits ,aussie , russian etc. The 744s are slowly becoming a retirement home for ex BA pilots who want to live in London and fly only to the US. The A310 are also seeing all types of east Europeans who can fly the plane but cant read a checklist in English. At least another 50 are are due to join up in the next few months. This unprecedented influx is leading to a lot of anger amongst AI FOs who are now stuck being first officers as there is no requirement for new capts. The west is truly taking its revenge.

The West is not taking its revenge - this is indeed unfair to say. The airline is too stupid to maintain a long-term personnel plan. I personally do not care if the a/c are flewn by Indians or Westeners.

Since local pilots are not available to be Captains, it makes good business sense to hire foreign Captains until the local FOs become Captains. Do the foreign Captains have to join the Pilots union? Are they paid about the same with benefits that are given to local Captains?

Outsourcing is not a one way street. I think Mrniji is right, AI did not plan accordingly to staff its pilots. And with the breakneck expansion of AI, IC and other airlines, old and new, the situation will get worse. The hiring of foreign pilots is only a stop gap.

Captain Jackson or Captain Jaikishan.

This is a strike back? Thousands on thousand of jobs in the US alone lost and India highers maybe a 100 foreign pilots? This is not exactly what I call a strike back.

When Air India, JET, etc open res. offices in the US, UK, or out of the country, then I'd call it a strike back!

This comparison must be a joke... as ASSFO said, 24 pilots does not make up for the thousands of jobs

I think this just maybe the tip of a really big iceberg. In the very long run, I am sure that local hires will end up comprising the majority of the pilot corps. But judging by the amount of airplanes recently ordered by Indian companies and the amount of time and resources necessary to train a pilot to fly a transport airplane, there could be tremendous opportunities for qualified pilots in India in the next 5 years.

I also disagree that this is revenge at all. I do not believe that thousands of Indians are being laid off to be replaced by non-Indians.

The question is this... Are there local pilots available? Since:

Rocketman,

The phoren influx ain't stopping anytime soon, and while we may think that the "west is taking revenge", is it really??

Considering the number of desis who went the other way to SIA, MH, EK, etc this is just a drop in the bucket. I believe Jet is only taking Direct Entry Capts, no F/Os, contract terms are limited to 1 or 1.5 years only.

Finally, what is the alternative? a desi 200 hr CPL sitting in the right seat of a 777 - not a leap considering they are in 737s already..? How will the labor pool get bigger when it is hard to find any CFIs teaching anywhere, because they are all flying right seat 737 NG?

If these guys cannot read a check list in English, how do they communicate with the FOs and cabin crew or for that matter the engineering or commercial staff?
An airplane might disappoint any pilot but it'll never surprise a good one.

In the last few months Nearly all Pvt carriers have hired Expats. But its only a Temp phase.Until the Locals Qualify.
At BDA/DHL 6 Brazilians have joined up in Flt ops as commanders,They have a different accent but they know their job very well.
