US Airways Ending Grand Rapids/GRR Service

Thu Jul 21, 2005 12:44 am

This didn't surprise me. I was actually just thinking about this last week.

US Airways Express is ending their four daily PHL-GRR flights on 12 October 2005.

Wonder if Skyway will squeeze another flight from our already maxed out flight crews and planes.

If USAir states they were doing well on that route, why not cut it back to 2 r/t flights instead of 4.
Good Luck to all Skyway Pilots! It's been great working with you!

No suprise to me either. I used to fly PIT-GRR, but now I fly on CO via CLE.

So when does FL add service to GRR? I would think that now with some potential open market and need for an LCC in GRR that FL would be looking more seriously at GRR.

Well I could see FL doing an AM out of GRR to PHL and a late return from PHL to GRR, also add flights to ATL and Florida as well, since they have been in FNT for a while now they do have a following.

It seems as though FL has missed, in my opinion, a creditable market in GRR. I wonder if they are a little concerned about taking on too much of NW in their Midwest markets. But now with US pulling out and NW in further financial trouble due to a potential strike if FL wouldn't be smart for adding ATL, MCO, TPA, and PHL flights. Once a day to MCO and TPA, two to PHL and three or four to ATL.

Hmmm... anybody in FL HQ listening?????

Probably not, management doesn't really listen to things that make sense very much.  Silly

"Don't let the door hit ya..." and all that.

Paging jetBlue. Please pick up the white courtesy phone next to the US Airways gate. Paging jetBlue. Please pick up the white courtesy phone next to the newly-vacated, completely open, ready for your occupancy US Airways gate.

LOL.

Actually, I was at LaGuardia last week catching a flight home to Miami, when I saw Eagle's LaGuardia flight boarding, and it just made me think why on earth US Airways still flies PHL-GRR, because I don't think the route made much sense.

And I doubt airTran, or anybody else, is in a huge rush to replace them.

FL would not waste an aircraft on PHL-GRR, sorry.

If anyone could make it a go it would've been US, but they couldn't.

There are a heck of lot better cities that FL could serve out of PHL, including existing stations, nevermind the fact that FL doesn't even fly to GRR.

Should help CoEx with all their connections in EWR, but CoEx needs to adjust some their flight schedules.

The early a.m. flight from EWR-GRR departs EWR way too early (7:00 am) for any connecting passengers in EWR to take advantage of- basically O/D pax.

The later flight from GRR-EWR arrives EWR too late (8:09 pm) for all but a few European flight connections out of EWR- again, basically O/D pax.

Actually, adding a third flight and cutting back one to CLE if necessary would be good. Something like this:

GRR-EWR
6:00 am - 7:45 am
12:15 pm - 2:00 pm
3:45 pm - 5:30 pm

EWR-GRR
9:30 am - 11:30 am
1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
7:30 pm - 9:30 pm
Direct KNOBS, maintain 2700' until established on the localizer, cleared ILS runway 26 left approach.

CO does it right. Keep CLE as their Midwest/Great Lakes region connector... while letting EWR be for Int'l/East Coast. Keeps EWR from getting any more congested... offers a VERY convenient connection for travelers through CLE... and you don't have to do something crazy like (random example) SYR-EWR-GRR... you can go through CLE which is relatively on the way. It would make way too much sense for US to run PIT like CO runs CLE though... sense isn't abundant in US HQ.

Don't forget that CO also has twice daily ERJ service from IAH as well, making connections to Honolulu and Maui, California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, 30 cities in Mexico, 11 cities in Central America, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Brazil, possibly Argentina by November, and several islands like Jamaica, Aruba, Cayman, Bahamas, Trinidad, and soon to be Bonaire.

As I browsed Flytecomm the PHL-GRR flights always seemed like an oddball. No surprise to me it's discontinued. GRR still has multiple mainline flights to DTW, ORD and MSP, plus non-stop to LGA, DFW, ATL, CVG, CLE, EWR, IAH, MEM, DCA, and MKE.

I was just at GRR today and there didn't seem to be many people waiting for the US PHL flight. I've heard loads have been as low as 10ish. PIT seemed to make more sense than PHL (much like CLE vs EWR), but they cut that one too. US just isn't very popular here.

I agree. NW just added FNT-LAS to counter FL's flight. It seems NW is not ready to give too much space to competition, and if FL were to start in GRR (which would be nice), I suspect NW would make an attempt to crush them like they are trying to do in FNT.

Loads for PHL-GRR were around 60%, slightly below the system RJ load factor. Yields were the main problem, though; lots of conx to Florida and such.
I'm the expert on here on two things, neither of which I care about much anymore.
