Mediterranea: Iberia's New LCC

Thu Jul 21, 2005 8:49 pm

As ABC newspaper says today, Iberia will start in Jan 06 operations of its LCC from BCN (which probably will be called Mediterranea).

They will operate from BCN (as hub) to compete with Ryanair and Vueling.

They will use the money of their shares in Amadeus. Other possibility will be to buy part of an existing carrier. They say Vueling, that operates from BCN.

Buying part of an existing carrier is something they are really considering, because will be much more easy to keep the costs low, as wouldn't be Iberia the only owner.

Isn't that the same name as the ferry company that goes around the balerics?

Yes, but who knows.

The article says they will use that name if it is not copyrighted. I suppose they will have considered the ferry company (because it is obvious).

Believe it or not...I have never been to the Balearic Islands  duck

However, is the ferry company's name "Mediterranea"?...isn't that "Transmediterranea" instead?.

Interesting, although I don't like the idea at this moment. Maybe it will become an attractive project later, when it has more "shape".

Reading again the article, it says any other major carrier in Europe has its own LCC. It is true BA created Go and they sold it, but isn't Germanwings owned (al least in part) by LH?

If Iberia are setting up a no-frills lo-co subsidiary does that mean they will be reintroducing a few frills (free drinks and food) on European routes?

After all, intra European routes on IB are already about as no-frills as you can get. What less is this subsidiary going to give you?

At least Vueling won´t lose your luggage half the time.......I have already flown them twice, and I absolutely love the airline. Am not looking forward to flying iberia tomorrow from seville to london......will probably never see my bags again.
