Delta Pulling Out Of HKY?

Fri Jul 22, 2005 12:47 pm

Whats the word on the Delta HKY service?

The Hickory, NC service has been running below 30% capacity since it started. It has also been running 90% leisure travelers which equals very low yeilds. With Delta's continued losses I don't see this flight sticking around for much longer.

I guess with HKY only being 1 hour away from CLT it makes it hard to compete. 3 flights a day versus 650 flights a day...which airport would your chose?

The flights will be there at least a year. If by then DL still has poor loads then they would consider dumping the route. If service was discontinued before that time it would have to be a mutual decision by the airport and DL.
It's a big building with patients, but that's not important right now.

Apparently, if loads don't improve, Delta is going to have to ask the community to buy unused tickets, which will cost them $250,000 million dollars a month (I'm serious, read the article  Wink):

Now *that* is quite the subsidy.  Wink

Heck, I'll pull for the poor loads from HKY if this is true...maybe Delta can post a profit  Wink

Meanwhile, over in Kinston, the results have been good:

For those who don't know, Delta launch service to Hickory and Kinston on the same day. They are the only airline at both airports.

They were announced at the same time, but I think ISO started a month or two before HKY.

If DAL is the only carrier at HKY, couldn't they apply to the feds for an Essential Air Service operating subsidy?

Nope. HKY is too close to CLT to qualify for EAS subsidy.

That's why USX/CCAir was permitted to pull out in the first place.

See http://dmses.dot.gov/docimages/pdf80/161485_web.pdf.

Ah, thanks, A330. The 75 mile limit? Maybe it should be cancelled then.

I think KIN is doing better becasue it is a 2 hour drive from the closest major airport, which is RDU. Whereas HKY is just a 45 min drive from CLT. Many people in HKY still find it more conveinent to drive to CLT to catch their flight...also there are a lot of Dividend Miles members in the HKY area.

Hey, I'm a huge fan of the EAS program, but repealing the 70-mile limit would be a total disaster. The dozens of communities that would again qualify for EAS subsidy would be a major drain of resources away from the communities that actually need the service.

Replace RDU with MBJ, or else replace KIN with ISO.  Wink
