DFW's New Terminal D Is Open

Sat Jul 23, 2005 9:18 pm

The new international Terminal D at DFW opened this morning at 0400L. The first international departure was a Champion Air B-727-200 that left at 0600 for CUU. The first international arrival was a Mexicana A-319, at 0700, arriving from Mexico City. The first multipul departures were another Champion B-722 to CUZ and a Jazz CRJ-70 to Vancouver.

Due in this morning is a Korean Air B-747-400 from Soul and a TZ L-1011-500 military charter.

Yay it's finally open! I've been waiting for this a while. It's just pretty pathetic that the first departure was a Champion 727. I realize AA won't be therer for a few weeks, but jeez...they could've had some "celebration departure" or something. I somehow doubt the passengers on that Champion flight realize the magnitude of this new phase at Dallas. But then again, most passengers don't pay that much attention.

Great to see that it's open! I can't wait to fly through next Saturday.  Smile

I think it is great that the first international departure was a B-727-200. But, you are right about it being a charter. It should have been a scheduled carrier. It is great that one of the first arrivals is a B-747-400 and a L-1011-500.

I got a picture of the arriving Mexicana flight parked at the gate this morning. It's in the queue now.

Here are some photos and renderings from the airport's website.

AA and MQ are on a 30 day hold to start service from Terminal D.
That means that once AA and MQ accept the Terminal they have 30 days to move in.
Right now the issue is the baggage system. Same vendor is installing a bag system in MIA and it does not work there yet either.

Correction:
The MX arrival was not from MEX, it was either Zacatecas or Morelia (they alternate days). The Jazz was probably to Toronto, not Vancouver.

You are correct on the MX arrival. The initial information I got was it was arriving from MEX, but that was later corrected, it came from Zacatecas. Or at least that is what I have now.

I'm still showing the morning Jazz flight as coming in from Vancouver. The afternoon Jazz flight is the Toronto flight. Again that is the information I have.

Sometimes I do not get accurate information on the international traffic, as I work in Airfield Operations, not Terminal Management.

Unless the AC Jazz was a special charter or ferry flight, then it most definitely came from Toronto. At the moment, AC only serves DFW from Toronto. There are no scheduled flights from DFW to Vancouver outside of AA's.

Latest I heard from my friend at AA is right now late Sept or early Oct for AA's move.....

Does any DFW-o-phile know if good views can be obtained on the airliners at Terminal D from the vantage point of International Parkway coming and leaving the airport?

One of the few good things about international service at DFW for spotters was the good views from the roadway of the international gates at Terminal B. You could see the KL, BA, and LH flights in the afternoon, and relieve some of the AA MD-80 and 757 boredom.

As for views, it depends on which gates. I know the north side of Terminal D would be blocked by what is now Terminal B's gates 1-5 which is parallel to Intl Parkway. But, the south side of Terminal D (gates D1 to whatever) is open since there is no Terminal F or other bulidings.

The north/south ends of the terminal will offer almost the same ability to see parked aircraft from International Parkway as the existing "semi-circular" style Terminals A/B/C/E. Terminal D is slightly more squared off instead of a continual flowing arc.

The only thing blocking views slightly will be the towers supporting SkyLink, and from the northbound lane a lot of the infrastructure construction between the north/south lanes reduced views slightly.

Article in Dallas Morning News Saturday by an "architecture editor" really panned the terminal because it was too sterile, too much glass, not enough southwestern personality, etc. It IS a total departure from existing design at DFW (fortunately), but think he was a little heavy-handed in his review. Terminals need to be functional first, and have a "theme" secondly, and it appears they have addressed the functional requirements -- time will tell. While it does have the glass ceiling/open sky feel of newer airports such as HKG and others, they at least put a lot of local artists work all around the terminal to try and enhance it.

And the restaurants/shops in the new terminal is a FAR departure from anything in most airports.

Okay, now that D is open, and all the international airlines formerly of the high B gates have moved over there, does anyone have anything firm on what will become of Terminal B? Or is anything firm at all, yet? I know there has been speculation for months that perhaps if DFW can't fill E with another airline, they will move all of the B airlines over there and turn E into an Eagle hub. Thoughts?

The closing of Terminal E is only one thought of the DFW Airport Board. I had not heard anything about American Eagle moving there. It would be a little inconvenient connecting with the AA flights, but with SkyLink, it can be done.

On rumor going around is to move some DFW Airport Departments ther until an airline leases the gates. We are really short on office space.

Maybe some more WA propoganda, opps sorry, I mean PR can be filmed in a darkened and empty Terminal E?  eyepopping

Sorry for my typo -- I meant that the rumor of a few months ago was that all the remaining airlines in B would move to E, leaving Terminal B for Eagle.

Commavia,

I heard the exact same story but have yet to hear of any firm plans. Does anyone have any news about Terminal B becoming an all American Eagle terminal, just as Terminals A and C are now all American Airlines?

RE: DFW's New Terminal D Is Open

Mon Jul 25, 2005 12:00 pm

Just went through Terminal D this afternoon as I arrived on BA 2193 from LGW. I can do nothing but rave about the terminal architecture....it is simply outstanding and truly world class...it felt more like a museum than an airport terminal. Wide corridors with tons of class and lots of natural light...it is very welcoming and refreshing after being on a longhaul flight for 10 hours. It is probably the prettiest airport terminal I have seen or been through. DFW definitely did their homework, and I believe that the 1.7 billion was well spent.....
But, they obviously rushed its opening, and should have waited several weeks. Two reasons: they are still putting the finishing touches on some interior concessions and stores, and not everything is open yet, or at least it appeared that way from the overhead secure walkway from the gate to the customs area.
The biggest reason, and my biggest complaint? The baggage system. As BA 2193 arrived late today, and was the only flight arriving within at least a 30 minute radius, there was no reason for the lack of preparedness that was exhibited. Passport control and customs were a breeze. Collecting your bags was the problem. The last thing any passenger wants to do after spending 10 hours on a longhaul flight, after having had to clear passport control, is to wait another half and hour-45 minutes for their bags to come off the plane. That is exactly what happened. The flight got in at 245, most people were through passport control by 300, and most didn't leave until 330-345 as it took that long for the bags to come off. They came off in slow trickles. One minute about 20 bags would come off the belt, then about 5 minutes later, another 20 would come trickling off. A lot of people, including myself, were openly complaining about how long it took....especially for people with connections to make. It was clear that there are still problems with the system, problems that should have been worked out before opening such an otherwise marvelous facility. However, if the baggage problem isn't fixed, then I would urge connecting passengers to avoid the facility until everything is straightened out.

US330 -

that is the main reason why AA is not using Terminal D yet. They will be ultimately responsible for the baggage system, and until the kinks are worked out, they will not move in.

BTW - give the airport a break, you landed on Day 2. No matter how much you prepare, you can never really get everything right until real planes land. If you have problems three weeks from now, then I would be concerned.

You can access it with any ticket. In fact, DFW is touting the "smart" parking garage as an option for anyone who wants quick parking - regardless of what terminal you fly out of.

Terminal has a skybridge connecting it over to Terminal C. The skylink also runs though it, so there are ways to eaisly get through it.

I can't wait! Next Saturday I get to go tour Terminal D. I am gonna arrive for my flight 3 hrs prior so I have time to get the seat I want, and tour all the terminal.
I hope all the kinks get worked out be next weekend.

Does anyone know what is open at that airport at 3am on a saturday morning?

Two things....DFW airport shouldn't have opened the new terminal since it wasn't ready....it really wasn't, but come hell or high water, there were not going to be any further delays.....and second....I hope the WA is repealed...this is really going to be fun to watch Fagen and Cox squirm...

From experience in the baggage industry, I can say that there is slight benefit to volume ramp ups.

DFW's terminal D is a beautiful complex, and when complete it will be a world-class facility. I can't wait until AA (my new airline of choice) operates in D.

There will not be anything open at that time. During the overnight hours is when the concession people get their deliveries, so they are not normally open for business.  crying

Jetter -

To my knowledge, there is no concession open in any terminal until 530-600am. Always thought they should open by 5am at least, due to the 6am departures, but guess they just can't justify the extra hours.

Enjoy!

Just saw the terminal on Monday. Quite impressive! I think it is good they opened now. Who cares if all the consessions aren't open yet. I think its better if they open in phases anyways, and have airlines come over slowly too. That means there's less chaos on opening day with a full fledged crowd coming in. I stopped and ate at the BBQ place, and the cashier was still having trouble with the machine.

I was also aw-struck, at the number of fine restaraunts going in, with second floor seating over looking everything. The terminal reminds me of Austin's 'new' airport, just DFW's is a much larger scale.

Yup, everything's big in Texas, and DFW is no exception.
