Air Sahara 777?

Sun Jul 24, 2005 2:55 pm

Hi !

It has been reported that Air Sahara (S2) has signed a deal to lease 777s:

"Sahara gets slot at Heathrow
TIMES NEWS NETWORK, SUNDAY, JUNE 26, 2005

NEW DELHI: Air Sahara claimed a major victory in its quest for expanding overseas operations by bagging a daily landing slot at London Heathrow airport. This will help it mount a daily flight between Delhi and London from the winter of 2005.

Sources said that Airports Co-ordination Ltd - the company in-charge of managing airport slots in several European airports - awarded Sahara a daily slot at Heathrow. Air Sahara spokesperson confirmed the development saying: "Air Sahara was awarded the Heathrow slots last weekend in Berlin."

Sahara is preparing to start direct flights from Delhi to London this winter, and has signed a deal to lease three Boeing 777-200ER (extended range) planes."

It was mentioned in Aviation Week that they signed an agreement with ILFC to get two 777s and the were rumored to be PP-VRA and PP-VRB. But ILFC has not posted ANYTHING regarding any lease on their website and it seems that VARIG will keep the 777s for now since the aircraft are protected to be with VARIG according to Brazilian bankruptcy law.

So, what's going on ? Will Air Sahara get the 777s from someone else ? Will ILFC get planes from somewhere else to lease to Air Sahara ? More info anyone ?

I've no doubt that you're a lot closer to the rumours than I  Wink

The last I heard on Air Sahara was that they were looking for a total of 40 frames though this covered the entire spectrum from Turboprops through to Long Haul requirements. I got the feeling that the 777 was a strong consideration though I've no doubt that Airbus would be pitching hard too, the more so given they mentioned the need for more 737s in that report.

As HAWK21M stated, in India, things change fast so we'll just have to await a decision. Will post you an email if I hear anything further T7Man

If I was the boss of a leasing company, I would NOT lease to S2 - this might be a case where T7s leave one bankrupt company (RG) and are operated by a future bankrupt company (S2).. payment not secure... and.. better lease to a government organization as AI, as payment is guaranteed through government security, or better lease to a well-established airline as 9W, rather than to S2, who will struggle a lot the next years

That's only one part.. the domestic Indian market - where S2 earns most of their revenue currently - is basically having a "new airline a day" - I would rather be concerned here that S2 cannot keep the pace

They are a very good airline but have a tough stand.. without the parivar Subsidies, no way!  Wink

I read in Hindusatn Times on 16June 2005 that Air Sahara announced its plans to fly daily services between Delhi and London from September-October this year and operate two Boeing-777s on this route.

Can anybody confirm this?

I do have to say that I think Kingfisher looks like it has just as big a plan as Air Sahara !! I looked on its website and the aircraft its taking delivery of is amazing !! for a start up that is... very Etihad like eh ?? not to mention Kingfisher is planning the A380 !!! thats gotta be the smallest airline to look at that big momma of a plane !!!
anyway back to the topic.. sahara does and will have a butt load of competition soon and boy it better have a good strategy !!!

Amidst all this, everybody forgot that IC too have rights to fly international. Poor folks are not even being allowed to get planes for their domestic routes. They better sell off their international rights to Kingfisher. VM are you listening!!
cheers!

Currently S2 looks like they are fighting back hard vis-a-vis salaries & a lot of Pilots & AME are moving in.

Agreed,But.
All Visions never turn to reality. In 1993 East West,Damania & Skyline had Visions too.
Factors like Civil Aviation policy,GOI attitute & Good Mgmt will determine the future.
