UA Flight LAX-LHR Diverted To BOS-security 7/26

Tue Jul 26, 2005 8:38 pm

An AA flight LAX-LHR (departed late on 7/25) was diverted to BOS due to suspisious beheavor of 3 of the passangers. The aircraft has been searched and released to continue. No other notation in the news yet, maybe Boston area/LA area media websites will have more on this.

Which flight? Both AA136 and AA134 LAXLHR both show either ontime or earlier.

UA Flight LAX-LHR Diverted To BOS-security 7/26

Tue Jul 26, 2005 9:30 pm

It's actually UA934 from LAX that's on the ground now at BOS, scheduled to depart again for London at 11:00 EDT, not AA. Three Pakistanis "acting suspiciously" were removed from the flight once it landed, according to MSNBC.

Yeah - its UA

From CWT Corporate:

U.K., U.S.: Suspicious behavior of three passengers forces plane to London to land in Boston
26-Jul-2005 11:34:18 AM (GMT) BOSTON (AP) _ A United Airlines flight from Los Angeles to London was diverted to Boston on Tuesday because three South Asian people on board appeared to be acting suspiciously, officials said. The three passengers were detained, questioned and released.

Logan Airport Spokesman Phil Orlandella said Flight 934 landed in Boston just before 3 a.m. Three people he described as Pakistani citizens were taken into custody and questioned.

All three were later released and no charges were filed, said Gail Marcinkiewicz, a spokeswoman for the FBI in Boston. Their identities were not released.

``The flight crew made an observation of their behavior which caused the flight to be diverted to Boston,'' Marcinkiewicz said. ``It's all being resolved. They will be on another flight this morning for Heathrow.''

Orlandella said police searched the aircraft and found nothing suspicious.

State trooper Veronica Dalton said the three passengers had been ``acting suspiciously and making the passengers nervous.''

``The crew made the determination that they were going to land the plane in Boston,'' she said.

So where were the sky marshals ? , Did it really justify a diversion ?

Who pays for the landing/takeoff and parking fee ?, is the Homeland Security policy slightly "over the top" ???

If a good amount of passengers were getting freaked out by these three Pakistani men, did it ever occur to you that diverting the plane is a good thing for the safety of these men?

It's not completely out of the realm of possibility that one or more passengers, if they were fearing for their own safety, could attack these apparently innocent men. Getting the plane on the ground and assessing the situation was the best course of action.

Here in LA and saw the news. I am glad the flight crew made the right decision.

Wouldn't a place like Edmonton or Winnipeg be more in line with the normal route of flight for UA934? Or did Homeland Security 'force' a U.S. diversion so they'd have more control of these potential terrorists?

In short, suspicious passengers caused the flight to divert to BOS for a security check, which left passengers there for 9 hours. The good thing is, I believe this is only the second time a UAL 777 has come to BOS..The last time being when a passenger became ill. Cool for plane spotters!

My wife was put on a 777 from ORD-BOS a couple of years ago when a couple of 737/757 flights were cancelled and there were a lot of stranded passengers. Still a quite uncommon sight in BOS though, nonetheless.

The flight crew always has final say in the safety of flight. No question about that.

Just read a brief synopsis from the Purser about the flight...absolutely chilling. The steps which the entire crew (mainly the FA's) took during, before, and upon landing were amazing.
