Qantas 747 SPs

Sun Apr 30, 2000 10:10 am

Does Qantas still have it's 2 SP's. If so, on what routes do they fly? If not, what happened to them? Thanks for any help you can give.

The two SP38's are still in service. Originally they were the long haul aircraft used on the non-stop Pacific run, nowadays they fly around S.E. Asia on routes to places such as Manila and Indonesian ports. As the QF SPs were among a small number produced with Rolls Royce engines there was never much chance of other SP operators adding the type to their P&W fleets. They continue to soldier on in the QF fleet although the operating costs must be poor compared with B767-338s and even the Classic standard bodied 747s. When the next QF order for aircraft from either Airbus or Boeing eventuates, I dare say the SPs will be among the first to leave the fleet. Personally I'll miss the stumpy Jumbo.
