Ramp space at BLR is very limited. I wonder if that is why flights were diverted to MAA instead.

Well Delta serves MAA so it's easier there to get customer service, ground handling and fuel support...it was probably planned as the destination alternate prior to the departure...I would say diverting to an off-line airport is probably done as absolute last resort especially in a foreign country. Just because there was an airport close by does not necessary mean it's the best place to go from the operational standpoint.

Forget rains, that airport should be closed forever, it sucks.

NDTV are saying on their website on the Last Update Time: 7/27/2005 7:45:00 PM IST AIRPORT RUNWAY CLEARED FOR LANDING, ALL SYSTEMS OPERATIONAL

Its the grey part of the page

http://www.ndtv.com/homepage/default.asp

I wonder if the AI131 is still going to happen and if VS cancelled their flight to BOM to early.

The AI flight from DEL to YYZ has been delayed indefinetly as DEL didn't have the a/c to fly, which was stuck up at BOM. What happened to the one that flew previously from YYZ (on Sunday)?

Its around 10pm and i just got electricity in my locality, which was gone from 430pm yesterday over 30 hrs without electricity, which was just pathetic.

My dad walked around 15kms through the water and reached the domestic airport where he slept for 3 hrs and continuoed his journey and reached home at 10am after leaving office which is 22 kms from our house at 6pm.

Me and mom were simialarly trapped and it took us 9hrs to cover a distance 7km to reach my house.

I just looked at NDTV and they are showing aerial pics of BOM airport and cargo vehicles are covered and the tires of all 320s and 73Gs looked entirely submerged.

This has been the worst rainfall at Mumbai in the last 100 yrs.

On AI flights information that flight went on from DEL to BOM and AI187 was supposed to start BOM according to AI website schedules. Don’t know what is happening with AI at the moment as the website seems to be down.

My guess is AI had to position the 777 for maintenance. I was looking forward to that flight as it would have nearly been the routing of when AI used to fly to BHX in the 80s routing BOM-DEL-ATQ- Moscow -BHX. Anyway I wonder if its crew that has delayed the flight as there should be 777 with coming from Dhaka which should operated AI150 to CCU.

In general, day to day operations, what is the normally used runway there? I note from one of the charts that there is a runway - 32/14 - which doesn't have a parallel taxiway. Is that regularly used?

Normally 09-27 is used. Rnwy 27 mainly.
14-32 is the other Runway.Normally not used unless 09-27 is under Mx.

Not sure which act. landed (if any).
NDTV has falsely reported that airport is operational.

Situation is easing up...water is receding. Electricity has been restored in 90% area of Mumbai. Im not sure about cell phone networks, most of them still appear to be jammed while landlines are completely out in many parts of the city. No rains since the evening of 27th uptil now

One VLC just landed at 27. Commercial airlines will only operate from 10 am on 28th.

AFAIK, andheri west got electricity about 20 mins ago but then again my friend who lives there told me that all buildings in his area do not have it fully restored as yet.

Mobile networks have just begun to come back online---i suggest giving them a try now,

Nice to hear things starting to come back. Maybe AI will then be able to get their website up. Lets hope commercial airlines will operate from 10 am on 28th. I know the weather forecast on http://uk.weather.com/index.html is for more rain one hopes this does not cause many problems for aircraft.

Also according to the BHX website AI187A is scheduled for a 13.10 arrival.

LATEST ON BOM:

IC 687 has departing to DEL under special VFR conditions.
Still no NAVAIDS available, few landings at 09 with help of PAPI. VT-TAT , a Taj Air aircraft alongwith a few helicopters landed at BOM.
RWY 27 is being made available for operation for "fixed wing" .
My Question: What is fixed wing ?

Latest situation courtsey: MID-DAY:

http://web.mid-day.com/news/city/2005/july/114934.htm

With limited navigational aid made available by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), the city airport was made "partially operational" and four aircraft, including three with relief materials, landed here today.

"A special flight with Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Chairman Subir Raha and his team also landed as we have made the airport available for visual landing by aircraft with the help of limited navigational aid such as the localiser and the distance measuring equipment", AAI airport director Sudhir Kumar said.

Kumar said water has receded and visibility (upto 2.5 km) improved considerably today.

A detailed examination of other equipment such as instrument landing system and the very high frequency Omni Range (VOR), which continue to be under water, will be carried out and there is a possibility of them being available after noon, air traffic control officials said.

Indian Airlines, Air-India and Jet Airways said flights into and out of Mumbai would depend on the availability of navigational and communication aid from noon. IA said the first flight out of Delhi is scheduled to depart at 1 pm and land here at 3pm.

The runway was flooded and flights were suspended from Mumbai airport since Tuesday 2.30 pm after Mithi river adjoining the airport overflowed and inundated the runway.

AAI had a tough time clearing the drums and other material lying on the runway, after the waters had receded, Kumar said

Just returned from TXL - FRA and checked the AI counters at FRA.. a mess as usual with 4 jumbus departing Thursday ( houndreds of mostly Westerners/Germans checking in to the US flights, queue from Hall C to B, India in FRA - saw Khajarao three days ago, along with Sunderbans): Flights AI137 indefinitely, flight AI126 to ORD was apparently merged with today's flight, flight BOM-HYD delayed indefinitely.. FRAPORT managed everything professionally

Hope things clear soon, and my condolences for the victims.. the nature is striking back

Our whole office is still unusuable and will be so till Monday-Tues?? just hope that everything gets back to normal, but at the same time i am glad that our staff have survived.

Dad also told me the hill--i assume he meant the one near to which me and
Anuj take our pics from---had collopsed and fallen on all the huts and slums below easily killing over a hundered people.

Also there were many sorry sites and Buffalos and dead bodies were lying around the whole place.
He also said he saw AAI vehicles overturned.

This is awful. This brings back bad memories. The place I come from (RUN), has several world records for rainfall (from 12hrs to 2 weeks IIRC).

We got 72 inches of water in 24 hrs (back in '52)  raincloud  , and I remember 10 years ago when it happened again (almost broke the record again), we did not see an aircraft for a lonnnnnng time.

The freaking runway could not drain out the amount of water that was coming down, and try to imagine how long it took to (e)vaporize...

I got mushromms growing on my bedroom's walls.

Hope it fades away quickly for India  worried .

Due 09-27 Nav Aids still under Mx,We've been optng Our Flts in the Day since Yesterday.
If the Nav Aids are in Serviceable then 09-27 will be used for landings & I'll have a Night shift too.
Currently 14-32 [Rnwy 14]for landing & 09-27 [Rnwy 27] for T/Os.
Lots of delays due holding as 14-32 has a back track.
