Catering For Substantially Delayed Flights

Wed Jul 27, 2005 6:27 am

Waiting at LGW yesterday, I noticed that an Excel flight due to depart to Las Palmas at 08:55 had been delayed to 16:00. This got me thinking about the catering on delayed flights. Assuming that Excel still provides free meals (which I believe is the case), had the flight departed on schedule they would have served a hot breakfast to the passengers. However, departing in the late afternoon, breakfast would not have been the appropriate meal. So if a flight is considerably delayed, do they change the catering to suit the time of day? Would they cancel 220+ breakfasts and ask the caterers to provide an alternative meal? Or is the meal stipulated for the flight still served regardless of the departure time?

It depends when the caterers were advised of the delay...

If the delay occured because the aircraft had a tech problem at departure time then the original catering would most likely be destroyed if it had been loaded onto the aircraft. In which case when the flight did depart it would be catered appropriate for the time of day.

If they had been advised earlier and the catering had been kept chilled in the catering unit then there is a possibility they would still get a breakfast - depends on the airline and I can't speak for Excel.

If the delay was known about the previous day then the caterers probably never prepared the breakfasts in the first place.

It's difficult to say without knowing more about the circumstances!

All depending......Different scenarios are possible:

A breakfast flight is delayed over lunch hour and breakfast and lunch vauchers are given to the pax.......Breakfast meals will not need to be replaced. No inflight meals will be served.

A breakfast flight is delayed until supper hour and breakfast and lunch vauchers were given to the pax......Breakfast meals will be replaced with suppers.

A breakfast flight is delayed until late evening and breakfast, lunch and dinner vauchers were given to the pax.....No meals will be served...Maybe a snack......?

A breakfast flight is delayed until the next day....breakfast time....A fresh breakfast will be boarded and served to the passengers.

It all depends on the 24 hour chargeable rule and off course the Airlines wish.

I remember once a Bleu Line flight that loaded off it's Catering in our unit, and took it back up the next morning for departure...Very strange, and they where not delayed.

The worst thing I witnessed personally was during the heavy strorms in Europe on 27th october 2002! Our trucks could not Cater or handle the SQ flight to Singapore and the whole flight got delayed for a departure the next day...So we re-produced the entire charge at night with only a few staff-members that where present and only 3 real cooks and the cooks only did the FC/CC cabin...SQ payed for the 2 charges as any airline must do if they re-order off course!
