inflight fires are probably the scariest thing any pilot can deal with. kudos to the pilots for keeping their cool during the emerg. descent and landing. An in flight fire is probably my greatest fear as a pilot and something i hope i never have to go through.

Most of the time of smoke in the cabin it is no big deal. Usually a malfunctioning A/C or something.

No one said anything about a fire in the cabin...

Other than putting out a fire, nothing comes before getting a smokey plane on the ground.

It is true that it is nearly always has something to do with the a/c and is nothing important.

Everybody learned from the Swiss Air disaster that you get it on the ground without delay. Then you get the people off. THEN you sniff out the source.

Kinda nice to know what happened....I was just when something was going to happen with all those firetrucks around it.

Its been awhile since the "crash crew" has been called out while I've been working.
Good Luck to all Skyway Pilots! It's been great working with you!

Umm .. from the initial post :

Northwest flight 1045 just made an emergency landing in MKE due to smoke in the lav.

And smoke in the lav can be VERY serious : could be an overheating light fixture, fan motor, any number of things ...

Remember the AC DC9?

Not something you wanna be cavalier about, in any way shape or form.

Fire/smoke = put airplane on deck ASAP.

Smoke in lav = Pax sneaking a nic-o-fix and disgarding stub in waste container. Big fear.

Props to the Flight and Cabin crew for a safe return. Nice job!
