Ok as you can see , the old livery was around for such a short period of time! Usually once an airline choses to adopt a new livery they tend to keep it for minimum 10 years! However Delta's old livery was only around for a very short time !
For example this MD 90 went directly from the old old livery to the new one without passing through the intermediate one

Or the fact that, except the "old old" livery are all pretty lame.

Wasn't the actual reason due to a change in CEO management... the new CEO wanted a new look for DL?

Personally, the '97 or interim livery, as some would called it, looked absolutely horrible on the mainline t-tails (MD-80/90s & 727).

The intermediate livery (jokingly referred to as The Spirit of Ron Allen) came not long before he departed.

When Leo Mullin took over DL and began to institute his administration's plan, they included the current Colors in Motion (or "DeltaFlot", as it's commonly called) livery change in 2000.

Perhaps management thought that the old livery made the airline look "old" and wanted the airline to be seen as a modern up to date carrier ?

Delta's current scheme I have to say is my favorite, though I wish they did a billboard with Delta in the side of the plane, like PanAm use to do.

As I understand it, Grinstein has said that DL is going back to the "widget" or as the original poster called it the "Old Old Livery".

The "New" livery has be often referred to as the "wavy gravy" livery.

I believe that was in reference to the widget on the fuselage only; changing back from a curved (on the bottom) widget to an angled widget.

I love the new livery and new uniforms (and new and better attitute of the F/As)
I used to hate delta and used to hate their livery too.
I have noticed a big change with the employees (for the better) and the new livery makes them look more lively, more modern. The AA and US liveries look so boring and dark and CO's livery looks now outdated (so 90's). Not that i don't like them, but adopting a new look, like the new NW, makes it more attractive and fresh.

I'd rather look a little outdated than just all out lame. I think the DL livery is just boring and not even remotely interesting, it doesn't even look clean, or smart, or sharp, or bold or really anything. I think the new NW (looks so good on DC-10s) and the new UA (just looks good) are the best around...
