Delta 777 ATL-MCO!

Thu Jul 28, 2005 4:22 am

Well I just got my itinerary for a business trip from PDX-MCO in November and tried like crazy to get on the Delta flight that is a 777 from ATL-MCO and was successful. I know it's not a huge deal but it'll be the first time for me on a triple 7.

My question though: why such a sweet, long distance plane for a 400 mi. hop?

They put them into service between International flights, you make no money when not flying.

I believe so Pilots could get more frequent training on the 777, but im not sure if this is the same. congrats on grabbing a 777 iv had so many chances to do so with DL and AA but things changed.

The 777 is used on an ATL-MCO-ATL turn for a few reasons:

-The aircraft is usually between longhaul assigments and would otherwise be idle.

-DL can always use extra seats between ATL and MCO.

-The 777 doing the MCO turn is sometimes the backup aircraft for the 777s assigned to longhaul flights on a particular day - thus if a 777 goes tech, the 777 assigned to the MCO turn can take over and do the longhaul flight and DL can find a 764 or other type to do the MCO turn out of its big ATL base.

For years, DL has always used some of its longhaul aircraft on flights out of ATL to MCO (and sometimes TPA or FLL)......L1011-500s, L1011-250s and MD11s were also frequently scene on these runs.

And perhaps because the internal secter is very popular and it warents a B777 ? But then and again perhaps it's just because it's easier just to operate the domestic sector with the same aircraft that will fly the international sector ? Or mabey it's just cheaper to use one aircraft

Nevertheless, I am totally pumped for this flight. I'm a geek and I just don't care. The admin here that sets up flights is still mocking me insisting that I be on that flight!

It's a fun flight ... unfortunately not much more than ascend, get drinks, and descend, but still quite fun.

The 777 is an absolutely marvelous aircraft, and the crew you'll be flying with is a top-notch international crew (often the ATL-MCO leg is used for 777 training), so you'll get awesome service.

And if you get an upgrade, the nifty Biz Elite seats are fun to play with, too ...

What's neat is when you walk past the gate and look out the window, that airplane is just SOOO huge ... cockpit is right at window-level.

You don't get that with 767s, 757s, or (for sure) the MD80s ...

You should be, I would be; I've never been on a 777 either. BTW, what's the equipment on the PDX-ATL segment? 767? 757?

...thing is however, their 764ER is actually their highest-capacity cattle-cruiser. More suited for that sorta mission. The 772ER is just bonus  Wink

Good choice. I just flew CVG-CDG on a 777 and boy is it a nice plane! The interior is my favorite of any aircraft. If you are stuck in coach, get a window seat behind the wing (something like rows 45-57) for some huge flap and spoiler action. The wing flex is awesome as well. Overall the most comfortable plane I've flown in; have fun!

I too owe my first 777 flight to this route. I flew ATL-MCO and a month later MCO-ATL on the 777. What a fun flight it was. Like everyone has said, its simply a takeoff, climb, quick water or lemonade and pretzel servcie, then a decent and landing. Wish I was on one Saturday when I go to ATL. Instead, I'll be getting on a 75...Interstate 75 that is 7 hours... ugh.

Hi Concordeboy

I didn't know that the 767-400ER is better suited to those kind of routes, Is it because ( I ASUME ) you ment that the 764 carries more passengers ? Please excuse my lack of knowledge on this  Sad , Anyway your right, it's a very good bonus, I mean who wouldn't want to fly a 777 on domestic ?

Happy Flying !!  Smile

I've flown on ATL-MCO and I was on their first 767-400ER that was delivered. I thought that it was basically the same as the 777 with a 2-3-2 configuration. I didn't like the 764 as much because it felt that the seats had no room even for Y calss standards. Now I thought that DL was going to put video on the back of the seats like they did with the 777, but did that get axed because of DL's financial spiral? Anyway on the return I was on a 777 which I liked better than the 764 because the legroom on the 777 was better and also with the monitors on the seatbacks. I also flew on a 764 from ATL-HNL-ATL in First (FF) and looking back on my experience in Y I pitied the souls in those seats. I think that CO did a better job than DL in configuring the 764 for long-distance travel.

In DL's chosen configurations (domestic versus int'l), their 764ERs seat more pax than do their 772ERs.

The 772 is of course the larger plane, and when put into similar configurations (a la CO), it carries more pax and much more cargo than does the 764.

I thought DL got the 767-400ER for those routes as they have a higher capacity(seat more people than 777-200ER)

P.S. This would be my first T7 experience as well  bigthumbsup

Delta's Boeing 777's are great. I have flown them twice on the MCO-ATL/ATL-MCO Route and have enjoyed them. They are extremely spacious inside and the IFE is great. I wish DL flew more of them on this route.

No. Delta got the 764 as a replacement for their L-1011s, hence the domestic high-density layout at 287 seats. A 772 in a domestic layout with First instead of BizE and an enlarged Eco cabin would seat around 342 pax (proposing a F49Y293 layout), which would be too large for the markets they serve, at 55 seats more. Plus, the 764 can land at LGA (another former L-1011 market), which the 777 can't due to both weight and wingspan.

Ok thanks I knew they got it as a replacement for the Tri-stars and are used on those routes like the flights to Hawaii, and CO got them as replacemenrts for DC-10's. Int SCl the only int'l route for DL'd 764's?

I got my first trip 7 ride last year DFW-NRT. First class! Easily my best trip ever.
I think I shed more than a few tears when the crew got us ready for landing.

SLC is a 763ER. LIM is so far the only international 764 destinations, however there have been constant rumors of the 764 being use to BOG sometime down the road.

It's a high-density route. When we flew ATL-MCO a few years back for vacation, all they had on the routes were 764's, MD-11's and Triple 7's. Origianlly our CLE-ATL-MCO trip had a 777 on the ATL-MCO part (that's why I picked it Big grin ) but a schedule change put an MD-11 on it. That was ok, as I thought it was a beautiful ship, but I had hoped for that 777 ride.

A mere 8, with 5 more on order, if those are ever delivered. Original plans once looked for some 30 777s, but that deal never happened due to several factors.

No repositioning involved on the MCO flights whatsoever. They are only sent to MCO for the capacity and pilot training in between their flights to NRT and Europe.

And they have eight 777-200ERs. Any idea if there are currently any plans to take delivery of the remaining ones on order, DAL767400ER (or anyone else, for that matter)?

DeltaMIA or OttoPylit might have the more exact info, but IIRC, all 5 are still officially on order by DL, with 2 scheduled for delivery in 2008 , and the other 3 in 2009, but there might still be plans to sell the 2 777s on delivery.
And on topic of the 777 MCO flights, by looking at the flight schedules, you could come up with the routing for a single 777, which could go ATL-NRT-ATL-MCO-ATL-CDG-CVG-CDG-ATL-MCO-ATL (just as an FYI).
