UA To Suspend SFO-ICN For This Fall/winter

Thu Jul 28, 2005 5:09 pm

UA's currently 1 daily SFO-ICN will be suspended from Sep.7th to Apr 2nd, 2006, to meet the low demand season. Instead, UA will resume 2nd daily ICN-NRT route which was suspended since June 9th. As far as I know, UA suspended 2nd ICN-NRT to turn their slots in NRT to 2nd NRT-LAX, maybe UA will obtain another slot in NRT?

Kind of surprising because it links two of the Star Alliance hubs. Perhaps OZ is picking up some of the flying.
As for NRT, UA only flies one daily on the NRT-HNL, down from two a day. That slot has been un-used this summer, so that probably where it is coming from. New slots at NRT are hard to come-by these days.

Can you provide the source for this info?

Here is a quote from United's own website about Korea:

http://www.united.com/press/detail/0,6862,53051,00.html

"Korea is a key market for United as it bolsters its international operations, and the appointment of (David R.) Ruch underscores United's leadership position among U.S. carriers in Asia. The Asia-Pacific region, one of the fastest growing in the world, accounts for nearly 25% of United's daily flight capacity."

It seems ironic that UA would pull out in September during the very busy Korean thanksgiving holiday when many people travel to and from Korea, and since they've also appointed someone new to help develop the Korean market.

My thoughts exactly! Congratulations to the new guy, now we'll chop direct service! Talk about irony!

I heard through the grapevine that it's because we need the aircraft in more profitable markets.

The debate continues... Starwood or Hyatt... which is better

While loads have been decent on the new nonstop SFO-ICN flight, the US-Korea market suffers from overall low yields, primarily due to very cheap net rates being offered by Korean carriers by way of large brokers and travel agencies.
This was exactly the same problem United faced with its SFO-TPE Taiwan nonstop service.

From a costing point of view its more manageable to operate the flights via the Narita hub especially during the slower winter period when UA anyways has access to non used slots which need to remain utilized.

...and would also explain why SFO-SEL (later moving to ICN) was canned for the first time a few years ago.

UA competes against both OZ and SQ on the route, as well as KE.

You can check the vacant schedule on the UAL website, too. The source is..

http://www.traveltimes.co.kr/news/ne...+b+ON+a%2Ehosu+%3D+b%2Ehosu+%27%3B

where only Korean available. This article also says that the yield is low, two airlines'(KE, OZ) recent new routes made too many supply, Koreans' tendency toward national airlines(Is it only Koreans' problem??). Actually UA is rather expensive in Korea, just a little bit cheaper(~5%) than OZ & KE's. Anyway, next summer, there will be 3 UA flights a day in ICN, that's good news.

I'd sure like to see United redeploy that larger aircraft from Korea to South America routes during that busy period....October through Easter. How about a 777...IAD to GRU or IAD to EZE???
