WN Cabin Sing-A-Long Song

Fri Jul 29, 2005 1:58 am

On a recent flight last week to SAN for business, I flew WN. Much like the general public, I often find humor in some of the Southwest Spirit. Our return flight to PHX from SAN was quite delayed, and our flight crew looked like they had gone through the ringer that day. Even though everyone was tired, there was still a bit of energy left for some humor. As we taxied into the new D gates in PHX, one FA sang to the airplane:

(Song: I've been working on the railroad)

FA:

I've been workin on this airplane, all the long hot day...
Can't you hear our engines roarin, we've come a long long way...

..........
.........
........
.........

I can't remember the rest....any WN crew or customer that can help me out?

See? See? They DO have alcohol on board!!! Either that or they were trying to think of everything to keep pax off of them. I've seen some flight crews who are just as crabby and brash as the delayed pax are. Rather funny to sit back and watch. Big grin

Didn't they learn anything from those two HP pilots? I guess you'll hear this on Southwest's commercials now:

*Ding* you are now free to move about the saloon.

probably what I like least about flying WN.

Hopefully this "folksy" trend will go out of fashion! I'll take a crabby , old, NWA flight attendant any day!

I love it and it keeps me coming back.

Reminds me of an advert that I saw a few years ago with the original WN flight attendants whom still fly for WN:

"We've been telling corny jokes for the past 25 years and so far nobody has gotten up and left!"

People actually trying to have fun and enjoy their jobs when its a bad day, what a concept!

Checko - I definitely agree. Although I often favor UA heavily, I find my best experiences with UNITED are when the employee's treat you like a friend, not a problem child. This is one of the key reasons why WN ranks so high with customer service satisfaction...it is familiarity and comfort that makes you feel welcome aboard.

Last September, I had to fly home to ISP from MCO when my school closed due to hurricane Francis. Upon arriving in ISP, the crew sang

'We love you, you love us,
We got you away from "Francus",
We hope you enjoyed our hospitality,
Marry one of us and you'll fly free!'

Needless to say they got a few chuckles and applause from everyone.

here it is:

You’ve been sitting on an airplane
All the hot long day
I've been working on the airplane
We’ve come a long long way

Can't you hear the engines roaring
Rise up so early every morn
Can't you hear the captain shouting
Sorry we arrived so late.

Tell that to the WN flight attending who screamed at me to put my seat forward. You see, I was reclined and she was serving coffee behind be to someone. I accidentally sat up a little straighter and bumped her elbow and like a drop of the coffee spilled out.

I sure felt like a WN friend when she screamed, "you need to move your seat forward NOW" for everyone in the back of the cabin to hear!

I've heard this one:

To the tune of "I love you, you love me..."

We love you,
you love us,
we're much faster than the bus.

We hoped you enjoyed our hospitality,
If you marry one of us then you'll fly free.

I obviously love WN and travel exclusively on them for business.

My FAVORITE over the PA after touchdown was on a flight from BUR to LAS.

After a particulary "hard" landing, while on taxi to the gate, the flight attended said:

"That wasn't the flight attendants fault...

...and that wasn't the captain's fault...

..it was the as-phalt."

It still makes me laugh

I love SWA I fly them every summer and they always make me laugh. this summer I decided to go on NW to see what it was like to fly on another airline and I went first class. Lets say I am going to write SWA a letter saying I am sorry.

Kudos to Southwest crew for trying to cheer up the passengers. Southwest has a very good punctuality record and the delay on that day was probably due to circumstances out of their control. To all the Southwest team members we have say:

We love you,
You love us.
You doing alright without an Airbus.
Keep up the good work, brighten our days,
Hire more comedians as FAs.

I just returned to BNA on WN and on taxi to the gate I heard one that I have never heard before:

May other airlines be forgot, and never bear to mind
Because Southwest got you here, and we got you here just find.
So grab your luggage and your kids, and head to baggage claim
We had some fun and sang some songs, now we want you off our plane.

love it! WN is one of the only carriers that can tell their passengers to get off of their plane and get away with it. Too bad Song and TED (which cater to the leisure market (WN) don't laugh a little.

Inevitably though, corny jokes would start.... no bueno.

I never got a song but I got a lot of corny jokes.

Also on B6 delayed in FLL the pilot came out and was telling jokes and he was really funny, like while we wait on the taxiway, I'll come out with my hat and can and perform, and alot of other stuff. And when one of the male F/A's was introducing the FA's, he would say funny things:
Juanita, she was Ms South Africa (Actually true)and she was on The Bachelor and alot of other stuff (She was pretty good looking so stuff like that) and then the other good one was- Charlotte, who also happens to be my ex-wife and the whole time he would stay stuff along those lines. Very Funny!!!

On Airtran not too long ago, as we pull into the Penalty Box at LaGuardia because of weather in ATL. Pilot comes on, "Ladies and Gentlemen, I have good news and bad news. The bad news is that Air Traffic Control has just given us a new 'wheels up' time about 30 minutes from now due to weather in Atlanta, so we're getting out of line and taxiing over here to the penalty box. They often let us go a little earlier than that, so I'll be back on in a few minutes with a status report." Pause. Just long enough for folks to mutter, "So what's the good news?" "The good news is that I just saved a bunch of money on my car insurance by switching to GEICO."

I also thought that the Southwest folks used to sing a song (probably in the galley or during turns) about California customers when they expanded there. IIRC, it started off like, "Cal-i-for-nya here we come. To the land of 'Gimme some'." I don't remember the rest, but it wasn't very nice. Can anyone fill in the rest?

All the best,

Bill

Indeed, I've flown a few DAL-HOU legs this summer (including one this afternoon) and each time there was someone on standby waiting to get on the packed flight. WN could really use some 739ER!

Here's one to the tune of "Here Comes Santa Claus"

Here comes Southwest
Here comes Southwest
Right to your hometown

It doesn't matter
if you're rich or poor
'Cause we got the lowest fares around

Lots of peanuts, flight attendants singing
We're always merry and bright
So pack your bags and hop on board
'Cause Southwest flies tonight

They lock you in their airplane and sing childish, condescending songs to you. You're a captive audience, there's no escape, and they know it. Talk about unprofessional. The only way out is to have a cardiac arrest or storm the cockpit.

There's only one thing worse. Getting locked in a bank vault with Sally Struthers during a robbery. She'd be bawling and whining about the poor starving children and begging for money for hours.

I'm planning a trip to MCO. TZ / WN had a cheaper price than NW. I chose NW because of the singing thing (and the possibility of not getting a seat on the MDW-MCO leg on WN).

Can't make up my mind which is worse, the singing FA's or "Bible Bob", I don't mean to be an unsociable grouch but I just want to be left alone when I'm, flying, or taking a bus, or a cab, I don't mind witty replies or banter, Like the checkout woman in Foodtown tonight who asked if she could "lick my jelly tip" (a kind of ice lolly) or other spontaneous stuff but to be sung to...oh dear....That's why that teacher lady got voted off of Survivor Palau on the first morning.
We, the undersigned, do hereby consent.....

Can't argue with that. Although we try to entertain our customers with the occasional joke or song, we try to cater to our crowd. As a rule I believe in no songs or joke before noon. Also, I try to "play it straight" with our business/frequent flyer routes i.e. BNA-BWI. However if you are on a NE-FLA
route you may be subjected to the humor. At SWA we are a democratic airline! So the majority "fun crowd" will trump the occasional somber person on that route!

Wow, that's amazing to me! It's not as though they are singing the whole flight. Being a WN employee I fly us fairly often and have found it more the exception than the rule that I hear a song or joke onboard anymore.

Oh well, to each his own  Smile

The use of humor by WN probably has the affect of defusing difficult situations and dealing with nervous Neds and Nelly's. I bet their rate of air rage is a lot less than average in part to their 'entertainment'. Let's not forget that WN has no electronic IFE, so their is need to 'entertain' the pax to keep them calm.

I DO Like pilots that do short little jokes to break the tension:

"Ladies and gentlemen... We're going to have to park out here for about 15 minutes. It's not that we arrived a little early and our gate is occupied. That excuse is overused. The real reason is that there's a ramp guy there that I owe $100 to and I don't have the cash to pay him. He's off duty in 10 minutes and...well...you get the picture."

Your a cpative audience unless you choose to ignore it. It's called MP3 players, or CD players, or Cassete players, and a good set of headphones! That usaully does the trick. And if you don't like music at all on your flight, I know of a few good books on tape! Big grin

On a recent BNA to SEA flight we did the toilet paper race. The aisle seats race two roles of toilet paper from the front of the passenger cabin to the rear of the aircraft.

The gate agents in Nashville Luv to have fun I think its funny when they change city names, Las Vegas became Loss Wages.

Ouch!!! Whether you like the singing or not, WN employees on the whole seem to sincerely enjoy what they do and they do it with enthusiasm. That's a lot more than most folks I see working for other US airlines, all of who seem to be unwilling to let so much as a smile or a "hello" cross their lips!
