This service will be operated by Sunquest and details can be found on their website under:

http://www.sunquest.ca/page2.asp?id=2042

This A319 will be an addition to the fleet operating on behalph on Sunquest.

This schedule is a bit different, airlines usually sacrifice services to other Mexican resorts in order to fly to CUN daily. Is this a start up?

Juventus:
Skyservice is a Canadian charter airline that has been around for years (see www.skyservice.com ). Most of their flying is based on what Canadian tour operators want. They do lots of flying to CUN from various Canadian gateways, that press release is just referring to some additional services being added.

Actually, a (the same?) Skyservice A319 will be flying YXX-CUN this winter, I hear (sorry, no link).

No Sunquest is a tour company that has been around for years. Yes, their business practices are unorthodox compared to other tour companies/charter airlines. They pride themselves on offering charter flights from smaller Canadian centres and fly to destinations in Mexico which are less expensive than Cancun. Skyservice which is operating the airline service on behalf of Sunquest has also been around for a long time.

I believe Harmony is starting up non-stop Kelowna to Hawaii flights to this winter and WestJet is offering non-stop service to Las Vegas. Kelowna seems to be doing pretty good so far!

YLW has already enjoyed non-stop flights to the Caribbean and Mexico for a couple of years now, operated by WestJet. Allegro airlines flew to Mexico from YLW about 10 years ago as well, they also just about put one of their MD-80's into a mountain on approach to RWY15.

Well, I guess it's a good thing YLW put a second jetway in this year. It sure is gonna get alot of use this winter with all the new flights/airlines announced so far. I've also being hearing rumors that Zoom is going to start flying out of YLW this winter as well.

Wow, British Columbia to CUN flights with A319's. That's long!

I am happy that more and more Canadian tourists are visiting Mexico.
Next flights: MEX-LAX AM 738, LAX-PVG DL 77L, SHA-PEK CA 789, PEK-PVG CA A332, PVG-ORD MU 77W, ORD-MEX AM 738

Kamloops? Can YKA support 319 ops? I thought WJ was unable to operate the 732/73G to YKA but would like to.
I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

That's what I'd like to know!  eyepopping
Harmony is coming in with their 757's with non-stop service to HNL starting December. But Zoom, with 767's?

YKA's longest runway is 6000 feet IIRC, YLW's runway is 7300 feet.

I have no clue where Zoom wants to fly, all I heard was that they are looking into flying in YLW, most likely it would be a stop on a YVR flight. I can't see them filling a 767 with just kelowna passengers.

Can YLW's current terminal even handel a B767?
BTW, big thanks for the videos of the Harmony 757 taking off from YLW! I've been meaning to get back to you about that, sorry. Thanks again!

Didn't Pacific Western fly 732s into YKA all the time back in the 70s & 80s?

I heard years ago the issue with YLW was the mountains, not the runway length (please correct me if I'm wrong).

Good 'ol Royal Airlines use to fly YYZ-YLW for a summer or two and on the YLW-YYZ leg they had a tech stop in YYC for fuel. Apparently the 727 couldn't fuel up enough to make it to T.O. with the mountains in the way. (this was mid/late-1990's!) I think the next season the return went via YVR, which improved selling possibilities.

The only problems that the mountains pose are not enabling us (YLW) having an ILS, we've only got an NDB approach (RWY 16 only) which can pose some problems in the winter. But the mountains pose no problems to an aircrafts performance or range. AC flew the YLW-YYZ route with an A319 non-stop, WS flies it with a B737 and (I'm not sure if it was non-stop) Greyhound flew it with the B727.

The highest mountains in YLW's control zone are only 5500' high and YLW already has a field elevation of 1409'.

Just as a side note. WS also flies YLW to Mexico, Cuba and the Dominican Republic non-stop (IIRC) with the B737 as winter charters.

Yes, PWA/CAIL did operate 737-200 aircraft into YKA. As have B757-200, B727-200/300 aircraft types. PWA even dropped their B767 (C-GPWB) in here in the 80's on a test flight.
In the summer of 2003, we saw several different aircraft types including A319/A320 B737-200/700 B727-200 operating several charters from Ontario/Sask/Man and Colorado bringing firefighters to battle the many fires in our region that year. The fact is, the aircraft can operate in/out of here no problems, during VFR weather. The problem arises when our peak travel season occurs in the winter for Sun Peaks/Mike Wiegele Heli Skiing, and we are faced with 100's of skiers wanting to come in or leave, it all depends on the approach. The step down procedures are very complex and very fast for any Jet aircraft type, and PWA/CAIL spent numerous hours and thousands of dollars to perfect this procedure in the B737 with Transport Canada's approval. The missed approach procedures are just as complex, and a low ceiling day for an operator with a missed approach limit of 1000' and 1 mile vis, you're hooped!

ACDC8,

Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought YLW got an ILS last year....

Also glad you enjoyed the Harmony 757 video.

Cheers,

Timeair, do you have any information with respect to Regional 1's Dash 8 non-stop YKA-YYJ service? Is it doing well? Will it stay alive?

Well color me purple! Looks like they did get one in. ILW 111.300 for runway 16. I'll give my buddy a call later today (he flies the medivac for Carson) and get some more details on it.

DFORCE1,

The Harmony Video we speak of is just Harmony's new 757 taking off from YLW back in July. As far as I know it was the first 757 to ever visit YLW.
