BA's Trouble!

Do u think Ba is in trouble , having to sell air liberté , not having done any senifivative network expansion since 2 years ( closing a lot of routes , Trieste , Ashgabat , Tashkent , Gaborone , Agadir , Basle , Perth,
Calcutta (in Oct) , Nagoya , Osaka , Seoul and many others ...) and not making it to that alliance with AA ?

Poor public image (concentration of premium services, to the detriment of Y-class regulars)+£150 million loss=rationalization, and now.

And what of the fact that it has expanded the network elsewhere

ATL now x2 daily
CPT weekly
New 777 frequencies to BKK and KUL
LAX x3 daily
DXB x2 daily


Why continue with un-profitable routes? Continue and develop with the profitable ones makes better sense to me!

I think British Airways, to many people, has been the last vestige of the British Empire (up until now!), and as such has subscribed to the onerous "white man's burden" type of philosophy.

By this, I mean that it symbolizes Britain all over the world, and is finally shaking off the mantle of having to travel to all these "savage civilizations" merely to establish a British presence (can I hear a 'God save the queen' here anyone?) The economy is different today, private vs. government.

BA has foreign cabin crews on its South America routes. I flew once LGW-Buenos Aires and in tourist class, cabin staff were Argentinians, Brazilians, Italians, French. FA´s on First and Club World were British.

Is this pattern repeated on other long haul routes?

I know the British are a class obsessed society so...would the FA on First and Club would be the so called "Establishment" and the foreign crews "The People"?
Where would Tony Blair´s new (labour) men and women fit on the current BA cabin??

To be fair to British Airways (Lima) - a freind of mine is a BA F/A working on the LHR-KUL route. There are many Malaysian cabin crew working for BA and they used to work on the KUL-Jakarta route too before BA pulled out of CGK. She often works in First and Club - so it just depends on the rota and distribution of passengers (for language purposes) - and not some racism thing.

Every european airline has some foreign flight attendants. Mostly asians because they have to pay them less and they are very professional.
I dont think BA is in serious trouble. They are still europes biggest airline. But cutting services to some exotic destinations isn't so good. Even if you say they only served the destination because of former colonial ties, the flights were actually packed.

True Avion - interesting to note that virtually ALL of BA's Malaysian cabin crew were 'poached' from Malaysia Airlines. BA has found the Malaysian crew impressive (and this was from management and British crew members - not from friends who ARE Malaysian and working for BA). I have noticed over the years that since BA flew the first pair of Malaysian F/a's the service on its KUL route has become so much more LIKE MAS. Cabin crew now constantly pass through with trays of drinks (something SIA and MAS are very keen on) and the menu on-board over the years has become more Malaysianised...not a bad thing really.

ps...BA has said that its 777-service has become rather popular with travellers on the KUL route...so the service will go daily from October 2000. Plans are ahead to start a new daylight service KUL-LHR next year....I think BA may restart the LHR-KUL-CGK flights using the 777 on the overnight flight and the daylight LHR-KUL-LHR flight may then start.

Hi Lima,
The Agentine FA's are usually young girls who haven't been with BA for long. With time, they also get upgraded. One such FA (Maria-Laura), always recognises me, as I fly LGW -EZE twice annually. I remember her in Traveller, she's now working in Club.

A lot of them do get the opportunity to also fly other BA744 routes (MIA/CPT ETC.), although they are really needed on the Latino routes.

Things will hopefully get better with the new CEO. The main problem over the last few years was Bob Ayling who was universally hated by the staff (I know I am one!), and in particular the FAs. These guys are the most important people IMHO, and we can't afford to p**s them off!

There were many who resented him for not totally focusing on running BA - instead taking up positions for Tory Blair. I don't know much about Rod Eddington (ex CX and Ansett) but I think after Ayling we would take anyone.

BA are developing their products too. How long before we see someone else developing flatbeds in business (SQ copying the flat First beds being an example)? And sure we will copy others - economy plus/premium just like Virgin. But this practice happens all the time - doesn't it.

Anyway I am biased I guess but time will tell I guess!
