West African Airlines: Why To Only To Orly?

Fri Jul 29, 2005 7:28 pm

Why is it that West African airlines do not fly to CDG but only to Orly? Is there a set rule for this? Is Orly closer to the city of Paris than Charles De Gaulle? I recall Ethiopian Airlines having trouble with the French authorities when it initially wanted to serve CDG, them denying it access to any terminal other than T9 (mostly, if not all charters). While I am not aware of any particular reasons, could this be a way of the French government (always protective) keeping AF competitors at bay? At least Air Senegal, Air Burkina, Air Mauritanie and Air Togo fly to Orly from their respective homes, while AF serves their turf from CDG.

Yeah it is. It's about 9 miles from central Paris, as opposed to about 14 to CDG. Someone may correct me on that, because it's approximate, and the figures are from the top of my head.

Hardly makes much difference, because the local transport to both is excellent and fast on the RER (Regional Rail Network)

Not sure, but Orly has traditionally catered for French ex-colonial traffic, for example flights to Algeria, Tunisia etc.

I can't see a disadvantage of using ORY; it also has better domestic connections than CDG.

I also know that Orly gets a lot of traffic from ex-colonial places like the pacific and the carribean.. a little of subject I know, so Im sorry but maybe theres a reason why a lot of the ex-colonial traffic goes into ORY ?
Interesting eh ?

I would say that it is more a combination of cheaper fees and workable slots (CDG must surely be somewhat slot-constrained). This is just my interpretation - not facts. It does not, in my view, really matter whether ORY or CDG is served.

Orly is most defiantly cheaper than CDG and also as Pe@rson said the slot times are probebly mose flexible and convenient for the airline, CDG is pretty full with international traffic while Orly is way behind , so therefore their are more slots avalible at the time that is convenient for the AIRLINE not just the airport, so the airline can depart at reasonalbe time fom either end.

No. I am a keen backpacker and thoroughly enjoyed myself there earlier this year. It's a brilliant country - and one which is, on the whole, very beautifu indeed.

Orly is not cheaper than CDG - they have the same basic charges, with the exceptionn of noise tariffs on the landing charge where Orly is a slight bit more expensive.

Orly is also has the number of slots capped, so it doesn't operate to what could otherwise be its optimum level. I suspect that there is a thought that the bulk of these African airlines traffic to Paris is on an O&D basis rather than connecting (and where connecting it would be to other French cities rather than international) and so there is less of a benefit to flying to CDG.

AA, DL and US(?) all served ORY for years....weren't they "forced" to switch to CDG by the French? IIRC AA wanted to stay at ORY and bitched quite a bit when they had to move (surprise surprise). AA wanted the better French regional connections ORY offered.

Yup. The funny thing is that after the terminal collapse, airport authorites then wanted AA to move back to Orly, since they knew AA loved it there. AA refused, because of the costs associated with switching airports. They shoul have never forced AA in the first place. Orly is such an easier airport, IMO.

I backpacked through BiH last summer. Great place. Mostar, especially, is an undiscovered gem. That place could be the next Prague.

Mostar undiscovered? There are HOARDS of travellers there - even during the off-season. This makes it rather frustrating for those, like me, who don't like the 'tourist scene.' Nevertheless, it is quite a nice place, especially at night when it's quieter. A good place for contemplation, especially near the river (easy to get down there from near the bridge).

Besides the trip from Sarajevo to Mostar, one of the most beautiful and unspoilt areas of BiH can be found around the road from Sarajevo to Srebrenecia.

There are numerous villages and towns which are well worth a visit.

Air Algérie and Royal Air Maroc fly to both ORY and CDG because of the huge number of Daily flights, especially in summer.

Other West African airlines including Air Sénégal to DKR, but also Syrian Air, Royal Jordanian, Egypt'Air or Iran Air fly only to ORY for a simple reason : ORY is much closer to PARIS and offers the best connections with AF's Domestic network at Orly West.
Unlike Air France who is drawing from these countries to CDG the PAX in transit to European or Long haul destinations, those airlines are operating to/from ORY 95% of "point to point" service with French tourists to the very popular destinations in Tunisia /Morroco/Egypt and all the traffic of the families/friends/relatives of people originated from those countries (former French colonies) who now live and work in France but are often returning home for vacations.
