Wizz Air To Operate New Routes To AMS

Fri Jul 29, 2005 8:55 pm

Wizz Air, the largest low fare - low cost airline in Central and Eastern Europe announced today that it would commence flights on Amsterdam Katowice and Amsterdam-Budapest routes. The flights will start from 1st November and 1st December respectively. To date Amsterdam was one of the last major European destinations not served by Wizz Air. As from now the airline offers convenient low fare flights to and from the Dutch capital to the benefit of both CEE passengers and travellers from The Netherlands.

Wizz Air will operate 3 weekly flights on Amsterdam-Katowice and 4 weekly flights on Amsterdam-Budapest routes.

Tickets on these new flights as well as all winter flights are on sale now for as little as EUR 4,99 via wizzair.com or call centre on +48 22 351 94 44.

In the coming winter season Wizz Air will start flights on 9 new routes and increase frequencies on most of the existing routes. The increase of capacity all together represents a 65 % growth compared to the same period last year.

Interesting flights. Actually, AMS is kind of an oddball in the route network. For all the important cities, Wizzair chooses the same secondary airport as Ryanair:

Brussel - CRL
Milano - BGY
London - LTN
Stockholm - NYO
Rome - CIA
Barcelona - GRO
Paris - BVA

AMS is the only 'main' airport, except from of course their bases in BUD and WAW. Well, there is just no real alternative for AMS as of now, we will have to wait for LEY, which will not have commercial service before 2008.

The AMS-BUD route will now have strong competition. KL and MA have 4 daily codeshared flights (1 KL, 3 MA). SkyEurope flies the route too, and now Wizzair. And with Malev joining oneworld, it still has to be seen if the codeshare will remain.

Why don't they fly WAW-AMS? Interestingly, SkyEurope dropped this route. Were the yields that bad?

The reason SkyEurope decided to drop the route among others was due to high landing fees at WAW. Instead, they decided to concentrate on expanding the KRK base. Perhaps yields were low but I wouldn't be surprised if Wizz start WAW-AMS sometime soon once they acquire more A320s.

The only question I have is, who thought up the name and is the beer free?
