History Of DL's L-1011's

I would like to know some history about the L-1011's of Delta Airlines including: When took deliveries to last; Total fleet numbers; primary routes operated on over the years; When sold/disposed of them; Who previously owned and subsequently owned them (yes, I know ATA has several ex-DL L-1011's); Besides ATA, any other ex-DL L-1011's flying or in storage

Some of those L10s might have come from Western.

Perhaps the most interesting stat is that Delta flew at one time 55 of these machines (afer they incorporated the ex-Eastern aircraft). That was the most of any operator who flew the type.

Some of DL's L1011-500's came from Pan Am, also some of DL's L1011-500's served with Pan Am then UA before flying for DL. Also some flew with AC!

DL flew 71 L1011's, but not at all one time  Smile

History Of Delta's L-1011's

Delta ordered 24 L-1011s in 1968. When the program ran in to trouble, they ordered 5 DC-10s as insurance. The Tens were sold to and leased back from United and operated from 1972 until 1975.

Forty-one L-1011-1s were delivered new to Delta. Two -200s were leased from TWA from 1978-1980 for trans-atlantic service pending delivery of the -500s. Six -1s were later converted to -250s.

Eleven -500s were operated from 1979. Three were delivered new and the rest came from Pan Am & United.

Delta purchased approximately ten to twelve Tristars from Eastern after that carrier shut down. They may have taken a few from elsewhere (LTU?) as well.

I think the total operated was about seventy. One was destroyed at DFW.

Delta was the 4th airline to order the Tristar, originally ordering 24 airframes, in April 1968. DL became the largest operater of the aircraft, operating a fleet peak of 56 Tristars, altho they eventually owned 70+ thru-out its service history. If you see a Tristar designated a -193C (Dash 1) & a -193W (Dash 500) those were Delta-ordered L-1011s. Hope this helps. Regards.

My dad was a contracts administrator for Lockheed for over 30 years. He was assigned to the L-1011 program for many of those years, and one of the airlines he was involved with was Delta.

The information are completely correct. However, Delta also acquired six -500s from Air Canada, registered N764DA, N765DA, N766DA, N767DA, N768DL and N769DL).

Furthermore, Delta purchased a total of ten L-1011-1s from the Eastern Airlines bankruptcy estate (N781DL-N783DL, N784DA, N785DL-N790DL).

Oh yeah, the L-1011, great looking and sturdy plane. To be precise on the number of planes operated, DL has operated a total of 78 different L-1011, either owned or leased), out of 250 produced. Quite a large percentage if you look at it.

Don't know much about DL's history with the 1011.

For what it's worth, I flew it DL's 1011 only once from EWR to ATL in 1979, making connections to MSY. I'd just flown in from AMS-JFK and stomped around NYC for a few hours, so I was too beat to notice much. I remember waving the FA off and snoozing the entire flight, along with the 30 or so other passengers aboard.

Gosh, I remember when those birds were first at the TOC for conversion to DL paint and maint. You could see them from the runway while they were being worked on in the hangar. Please don't tell me how many years ago that was. It seems like yesterday.
