CO & 777LR

Does anyone think CO will ever order the 777LR?

It's the perfect plane to get to a lot of destinations from IAH, so let's hope.

Ever is a long time. In the near to mid-term I would say no. CO has no plans to operate any C-market routes (ex EWR-SIN, IAH-SYD, etc) that would require the capabilities of the LR. All current and future 777 markets are within the capabilities of the 772ERs that they currently have. While the LR might have some operation and payload advantages vs. the ER on some of the longer long hauls, I don't believe that the price premium for the LR is worth it, given COs route structure.

Will CO ever order the 777LR? Maybe someday in the future, if and when CO is in a better financial condition and has had many consecutive profitable quarters and CO's management feels it can take the financial risk or ordering this airplane. At the moment, the 772ER can operate all of the routes that CO has in mind for the near-term future; I was happily surprised to see CO's announcement earlier this week concerning two additional 772ERs which will give them some flexibility with aircraft allocation with the new Bejing, Dehli, Buenos Aires (hopefully) and Shanghai (hopefully) coming online. I was beginning to fear that the EWR-LGW route would be operated by four 752 flights per day instead of widebody equipment.

Two things to consider, the 777LR is an amazing aircraft with extraordinary capabilities - but it is a very expensive airplane. I dont think that CO, at this moment, can handle or justify the expense. Second, the routes for which the 777LR are suited are long, high risk and there is unproven pax demand. Segments such as IAH-SYD or EWR-BKK could work, but the risk is very high.

I am sure that CO would like to add the 777LR to its fleet - the possibilities that it offers are amazing, maybe someday.

The other factor to consider however is not only does the LR have much greater range than the ER, but it also has much more cargo carrying capabilities. Pull out the aux tanks, and put an LR on an ER long route and the cargo carrying capability increases. More cargo, more money. If the economy was in better shape, I'd bet that CO would already have the LR on it's order books.
