What Was The Noisiest Airliner Ever?

Sat Jul 30, 2005 9:54 am

The question is pretty self-explaining... Which airliner was the noisiest ever? Was it the Concorde, the Tu-144, the Bac 1-11, the 707 with turbojet engines, the DC8, the Coronado, the Comet or another airliner?

I know that the operational noise levels for takeoff, sideline and approach are stated in Jane's for most airliners of today, but do there also exist Stats for the 727, the Bac 1-11 and so on?

I only know that the operational noise level for Concorde at takeoff was something about 120 EPNDB, which is very loud.

So, which one was the loudest? And which one is the loudest still flying?

You forgot the Caravelle, which wins in my book. I have seen almost every kind of commercial jet less Russian, takeoff, taxi and land and the Concorde on take off, along with the Caravelle is the noise king.

Having heard the Concorde many times ... The olympus were really noisy ... Much more than a 747. His taking off in CDG were incredible

The Concorde was loud, but based on what I've read on the few TU-144 reports here, it had to be louder!

Of course, the SST jets were the noisiest ones around... however, they are a bit off-competition, I'd say!

I have heard most of the jet airliners (with the exception of the Comet, the VFW-614, the TU-104 and a few others) but my favourite is the BAC One Eleven... and this by far!

707s, DC-8s and Convair 990s were quite noisy as well, so were the Caravelle and any early jetliner. But the BAC One Eleven was the ultimate "noise maker".

Too bad we can never hear any of them in their original noisiness .....Except maybe the RAF VC-10s.....Altho a hushed BAC One-Eleven isnt really hushed all that much...LOL.

The loudest I ever heard was a Concorde, but according to others, TU-144 passangers needed to pass notes to each other because of the noise.

As to my current spotting days at LGA, MD-80 is the loudest plane there  Smile

Without a doubt, the loudest aircraft ever for the occupants has to be the Britten Norman Islander. I rode on one out to Beaver Island in Lake Michigan one time and the pilot was stuffing cotton in his ears before he put on his ear protectors.....I thought it was going to be bad....it was.....sitting no more than four feet from the exhaust stacks...when the engines came up to full chat for takeoff the sensation was akin to a nice, freshly sharpened Dixon Ticonderoga being shoved in your ear canal....20 mile trip gave me a damned migraine it did.

But for outside? Either the Boeing 720 or maybe a Viper powered HS125....although as our colleague remarks the Caravelle was a damned fine Gallic effort there.

The FAA has a very handy database containing certified noise levels for every aircraft and engine combination certified in the US and many foreign models as well.

http://www.faa.gov/about/office_org/...quarters_offices/aep/noise_levels/

According to them, the winners are:

US
Takeoff: Boeing 747-200 w/ JT9D3A (110 EPNdB)
Sideline: Boeing 727-200 w/ JT8D-17RQN (104.7 EPNdB)
Approach: Douglas DC-8-63 w/ JT3D-3B (108.5 EPNdB)

Non-US
Takeoff: BAe/Aerospatiale Concorde w/ Olympus 593 (119.5 EPNdB)
Honorable Mention: Antonov AN-124 w/ D-18T (109.9 EPNdB)

Sideline: BAe/Aerospatiale Concorde w/ Olympus 593 (112 EPNdB)
Honorable Mention: Ilyushin IL-86 w/ NK-86 (104.2 EPNdB)

Approach: BAe/Aerospatiale Concorde w/ Olympus 593 (117 EPNdB)
Honorable Mention: Ilyushin IL-76 w/ D30-KP (108.9 EPNdB)

The TU-144 is not in the database. It used turbofans instead of turbojets, so its exterior noise might actually have been lower than Concorde's. Interior noise is a different matter.

Those stats are pretty good, but we should give an honorable mention to Alaska Airlines' flight 7095, SEA-ANC at 0230 nightly. The best 737 on this run I believe is an old 5X previously owned 732 originally from Air Zaire. Some nights when it is otherwise quiet, I listen to guess how long after takeoff I can still hear it. The sound generally fades just before it reaches Anchorage.

I went to school almost directly under the up-river flight path of DCA. While the old 4-engined recips may not have been absolutely the loudest, they took so long to fly past that they seemed noisier. Professors hated them.

On takeoff the DC-9 is a real screamer. But the loudest thing on the ground at SDF is, believe it or not, a UPS 757 with Rolls Royce RB211 engines. You can here them coming from all the way down the ramp. They have a rather interesting sound, too. Imagine someone going "Shhhhh" at 100+ decibels. and thats what they sound like when they taxi. However, the PW powered models will creep up on you, they are so quiet.

What about the Grand-daddy of them all...the Comet?
I'm too young to ever whitness one, but I watched a documentary a few months ago about Frankfurt Airport and it was said that in the early days of the jetset, they broadcasted the arrival times of the jets (Comet,Caravelle etc.) over the radio, so that people could prepare for the noise.
With a noise/size ratio the winners in my book are the Yak40 and Tu-134.

The old turbo-jets, with water injection (early B-707/720, DC-8, KC-135A/Q, B-52B-G) were very loud, in the area of 125+db. Concorde and TU-144 were also very loud with their ABs.

The Concorde is the loudest I've heard, but as I recall the early turbojet 707/720s and DC-8s, along with the 880 & 990 were right there with it, noisewise. The BAC-1-11 and Caravelle were pretty loud too.

Living in San Juan, Puerto Rico during the 60s, 707s, 720s and DC-8s were the most common types we got. I saw/heard the others during trips to the States to visit relatives.

Cheers, Ralph

How come nobody has yet mentioned the Hawker Siddeley Trident? The BAC 1-11 has been mentioned several times with its loud twin Speys Mk 506, 511 and 512s but the Trident had three Speys and, on Trident 3B and Super 3Bm three Speys 512s and a boost engine as well. If all engines were on full power and you are near the aircraft, it was louder than any BAC 1-11 but somehow "characteristic" for an airliner.

Although probably one of the noisiest passenger aircraft on the outside, the cabin was relatively quiet.

VC-10s are frequent visiters here at PAD. They are certainly loader than most other airliners, but not as load as the 747-100. The VC-10s are circling low over the city every now and then (god knows why ...) and I witnesses lots of UPS's 747-100s at CGN ... The 747-100s noise beats the VC-10 at take off and landing!

(not in order)

Caravelle
747-100 and 200
720 and 707
DC-8
727-100 and 200 with no hush kits

Never heard the Comet, or the Convair 880 or 990

Working near ORD, I can generally tell an AA MD-80 series and a NW DC-9 over the rest from the sound. Sure I get it wrong a fair amount of time, but for the most part, you just know.

The bigger jets have a different sound, though loud, I do not think they compare.

Of course, "ever," as the thread starter states is different from what I am saying, but nowadays, there you go.

Whilst Concorde was very loud, it got out of the area fast.
I remember VC-10's Tridents, 1-11's as being loud.
The worst at LHR in more recent times was the IL-86, very loud, lumbering, smoky, took forever to get away.
Often mistaken for Concorde, at first, but after you either saw the smoke or the actual aircraft and how long it went on for, it was clear that it was not Concorde, but another type of SST (Screaming Soviet Type).

1. Boeing 707: they used to make my windows rattle when I was growing up.
2. Douglas DC-8-60 series : Not to long ago I watched one take off runway 25L at LAX, it set all the car alarms off for miles.
3. Boeing 727: God I love them. I will cry when they are gone
4. Boeing 777: Yes the 777. The ones with Pratt Whiteny engines they make a deep hum. I can hear them taxiing miles away.

Sitting on top of the wing of a Saab340 isn't exactly quiet, either. Was in a Messaba 340 in row 4 or 5 starboard window seat. Crazy loud. Moved to the back of the plane after takeoff (there were some open seats), and it was a difference of night and day.

Have to agree that the 727 is pretty loud, though. Considering I'm from po-dunk Montana, the 727 is probably the loudest I've ever seen here by far.  Smile

Back in 1978 I was rowing in the lakes next to MIA. A 707 freighter took off apparently with a full load and was struggling to take off. The sound that jet made, made all 8 of us let go of our oars to cover our ears...PAINFUL!

In the Summer of 1989, I was playing softball East of MIA on a Sunday morning. A BA Concorde took off over our field, Mind you we were East of I-95 a good 4 miles from MIA and play had to stop because of the noise. Can't tell you which was louder but they were both loud enough to stop groups of people from doing what they were doing!!!

In my experience Concorde followed by BAC One Eleven/Tu-134. Current noise king (airliner) in UK is surely Boeing 737-200 still flying with Ryanair.

If it's loud enough you'll get a heavy vibration sensation in your chest. I've only ever experiened that with Concorde and Phantoms/Tornados. You have to be standing pretty close though.

Never heard the Concorde but my vote would have to be for the Caravelle and 880/990 for outside noise. The RR darts on an F-27 can hit a certain pitch that will ring for hours in my own ears. Vibration and engine whine in a turboprop of earlier generations can make conversation inside into a sign language exercise real quick.

That said, most any early generation jet was a real treat sound wise. Try the TU 102/104.

From the outside, the Concorde...watched and heard it land in nice warm and quiet Barbados...super fast and loud...from the inside, at least for me, was flying the Il-62, sitting in the back of it from Moscow to Simefropol...great flight, but could not hear a thing after landing.

Subsonic, Pound for pound, its got to be a HS125-400 with the old Viper 521 pure jets. This tiny bizjet would make a 707 sound quiet. It didn't roar, it didn't whine, it didn't buzz, this thing would *crackle* the air. No fans to be found on this little jet, and it showed: I think the range was about 1,000 nm max. All due to fuel consumption.

Tridents, RR Conway 707s were THE noisiest. Current noisies go to 744 RR powered aircraft, ask any resident around LAX at night and any resident near LHR early in morning. But I don't complain. The more noise the better.

Absolutely C680! I remember doing a runup on one in LGB and at full power you could actually see the fuel gauges going down...gosh knows what the fuel flow was for that single stage turbojet...

The loudest I have seen is Royal New Zealand Air Force 727s. But sadly those old birds are replaced by 757 in 2003. I used to jump out of my room and ran out side to spot the 727 and it can be heard from several miles.

Being military aircraft the RAF VC10's are not hushkitted and still operate to and from Bahrain. Try standing behind one trying to work when they fire her up.Very, very noisy and smoky and get my vote.

That's what I've heard too. I understand NATO & US pilots who went out

Must not have been very pleasant for the passengers of the TU-114 civil
version either.

How about adding the TU-104 to the list - based on the TU-16 bomber?
