Croatia Airlines To JFK

Sat Jul 30, 2005 2:35 pm

Does any one know if Croatia Airlines is going to start a non stop flight to JFK

...not with its present fleet anyway  Wink or will it be possible following Nouvelair's A32X cross atlantics ?! They may code-share with a North-American airline or continue to feed Star Alliance flights...

Croatia has it's hands full right now with Europe.. They have a fleet shortage, from what I understand, and Dubrovnik/Split are becoming more and more popular leisure destinations, while Zagreb is growing as a flight destination.. I believe they will continue expanding throughout Europe before going trans-atlantic.. Also, I don't think OU would use a 320 trans-atlantic, it would take a 330 or 763.. The interesting question here is, who will be first to go trans-atlantic.. Croatia or JatAirways..
What now?

this is a good question and it was in another thread today that JAT was suppose to rent a 767 for JFK but so far they didn't so I would vote for them to start first

Can see CO operating EWR-ZAG before OU even contemplate transatlantic ops. OU are in Star Alliance as regional memebers to feed traffic into LH and OS hubs.

from what I remember when I was in Dubrovnik a year ago, LH and OS have a strong presence in Croatia, with good frequent services to their hubs.

In the case of OS in particular, with their speedy transfer system in VIE, Croatia is already perfectly well connected with the folks west of the pond, (even if the bags aren't - our plane landed 5 mins late and our bags missed the connection - nice start to a honeymoon I can tell you!)

I always thought about that. A nonstop flight from ZAG to JFK would be perfect. The large Croatian population in northern Jersey and NY alone would be enough to fill these flights! I could always imagine them leasing or buying an A330 to do this. It'd be nice to go from the USA to Croatia nonstop. I leave for Croatia on Tuesday via JFK, but unfortunately we must stop in BRU, VCE, and then a car ride.

Croatia Airlines will not any Trans-Atlantic flight anytime soon...

They are classified as a Star Alliance "Regional Partner", and part of the condition of them becoming a regional member is that they will feed into major Star Alliance hubs and passengers can connect onto long haul flights.

They would be breaching their memebership if they launched Trans-Atlantic flights.

This also applies to Adria Airways too.

There are a lot of connections available to Croatian's to all the major European Hubs and cannot see a demand for direct flights. If they did offer flights to the US the majors would crush them on price, even if mean't connecting.

I beg to differ with this. LH does not want to even touch Croatia at all. 99% of flights to Croatia are LH code shares not actual LH flights. Also OS is not that big of a carrier in Croatia either. I go there quite often and I find this all wrong. The only carrier that is in Croatia Airlines is itself.

I do agree that OU is having a fleet shortage and that really needs to be fixed soon. I do not see OU going over seas any time soon. I would say that OU will be first going overseas. However Jat at one time opperated DC10 flights to JFK and a few other US cities

ZAG-JFK is a nice idea, but it won't happen since OU joined Star Alliance. Since that happened, OU has essentially become a feeder airline for Lufthansa. Perhaps OU will codeshare with LH on JFK-FRA, but I can't imagine more than that.

As someone also said, Air Adria is in the same boat.

I might be there on the same time, which airlines you flying and where you flying from? I will be flying from Denver and so far seems LH is the best deal I can find, what about you?

CaptinTut

I work for CO, so I will be non-reving from EWR to either FRA or FCO, if I go from FRA I will non-rev with LH to ZAG, if I go thru FCO, I will non-rev with AZ to Ancona Italy, then just take a boat trip across the Adriatic to Zadar.

What would be OU´s status in respect of ETOPS ?

Hi

I agree with NYCflyer, Croatia Airlines introduced new daily early morning flight this summer SPLIT-MUNICH with ATR equipment, emphasizing the role of a feeder airline into Lufthansa network. Supposedly, 40% of Croatia Airlines passengers during summer months are carried on flights between Germany and Croatia, some being tourists but a lot of them transfer passengers through Frankfurt and Munich hubs. (For example, in my company every two months a delegation of 5 to 7 people travels to Barcelona, and they always use LH service via Frankfurt).

The likelihood of direct non stop flights between Zagreb and the USA could could arise once Zagreb gets few more regional flights, so that connecting at Zagreb could be an option for a year round service. I would personally love to CO 757 on a daily round trip EWZ-ZAG in a few years.
This could maybe force Croatia into considering long haul US services.

I'll keep my fingers crossed.

An A330 or suchlike could be used for high density flights in the summer for tourists if a daily NYC service is not viable, enabling the plane to be used?

That's correct. My family tried to stay in the Star Alliance to earn miles, but it wasn't possible. We flew IAD-LHR on UA918, then BA2882 from LGW-DBK. The only time we could do Star Alliance was from SPU-FCO on OU. (then BD466 NAPLES-LHR) It's a damn good airline, I might add.

Have fun! I went there and to Italy in June and Croatia is awsome... especially Dubrovnik.

Though there's been a lot of discussion around here about transatlantic flights, nothing seems to have come out of them. For the near future, we can dismiss OU, since they just started making a profit for themselves and still have a long way to go before becoming fully independent. The costs of a long haul a/c, along with flightcrew and mx training, would be a burden OU doesn't need now. The regional fleet is stretched as it is and there are rumors, not altogether far fetched, that there might soon be a new baby Bus joining the fleet.

The answer would lie in a new, independent company with a fleet of mostly long-haulers. There were some rumors (again) a few years back about a new start-up company that would operate 3 742s, but that never happened. However, for now, Croatian operators appear to be content with sure-fire, booked-aircraft regional services and probably consider transatlantic flights to be a risky proposition, given the sure, well-paying business they have on regional routes.

Not exactly true. LH 733s and Dash 8s are quite frequent at ZAG, as are Austrian Arrows a/c, though they again operate codeshare flights on behalf of OS I think.

EDIT: pardon me, quoted the wrong person  bigthumbsup
