Kingfisher And The A380?

Sorry if this has been discussed before. I was wondering if Kingfisher's A380's would be a new variant similar to JAL'S 747sr's, designed for shorter range, increased passenger numbers, stregnthened landing gears for increased number of cycles.

frankly!! no definate info so far...but i guess not. Unlike Japan they plan to use them on international routes..

Thanks Aseem. I didn't consider the possibilities of international routes. Do you know what routes they are considering? How many airports in India will be able to handle the A380? Wouldn't an A340-500 or 340-600 or a Boeing 777-300er be a better choice to begin international services with? Is Kingfisher buying the A380 purely for prestige?

From all the indications we are getting, A380s are going to be used on North American route. Whether it will be non-stop or via europe shall be a commercial decision at that point of time.
Currently none of the airports in India can handle A380s, but BOM and DEL are being modified to handle them.
Agreed that B772/3, A345/6 shall be a better choice to begin international service, probably that is why they'll be getting A330s first. The sequence of delivery is like this; A330, A380, A350. The possibility of leasing any type of aircraft is always there.
Initially we all through that Kingfisher is buying A380 for sake of prestige, but as dust settled down we came to realize that it was infact a wise decision. A fair balance of A330/350/380 does make sense. Lets see how they handle all this.

I think they could use the A380 on the Kangaroo route. LHR to SYD, or any where in Europe to Australia. This would make sense because of their location (India is smack in the middle of Australia and Europe), and since no other Indian carrier does it.

How many Indian airlines are going to be given route authorities to North America? Air India had the sole Indian authority until recently when Jet received Indian Authority and is waiting for final US approval. Did Sahara also get approval to serve North America? How big of a market is there? With Northwest adding service to Bangalore from Amsterdam. Continental nonstop from Newark, American from Chicago and Air India looking to add service to Houston and or San Francisco. Jet wishes to start service from Newark. Which city or cities would Kingfisher consider serving. Washington Dallas or Atlanta? Not to change the subject any news on Air India's fleet renewal?

I have often thought about that. Indian carriers in my opinion should definetly reap the benefits of being inbetween Europe and Australia. An easy and quick connection in DEL or BOM with AI is something that I have hoped for for a long time. Well, we'll see what happens I guess. Indian aviation is changing rapidly as we all now.

Recently the U.S. and India signed open-skies agreement. So route authority is really not a problem anymore. The question is how many of these Indian airlines will be commercially viable and survive past 4-5 years. Only time will tell.

Kingfisher & 9W have curtailed Flts on the GOI request to - Fro Mumbai because of the Rains & INOP Runway Equipment.

UB sets up airline co in US

Well, word is that the use of the A380s domestically is under review at the moment. Would apparently be full-economy, around 750-800 seats (depending on certification). To increase utilization a routing domestic-Middle East-domestic could be used.

AFAIK, Jet Airways is rumoured to be one of the next A380 sales targets, and Engine Alliance seems to be agressively pushing the GP7200 to Jet.

A couple of things, I spoke to Nigel Harwood, former Airbus exec (the one that slanged off the GoI) and now Kingfisher COO - the 380's and 350's will be used on Indo-US routes. To circumvent GoI rules on 5-year operations he has set up a US firm with his three kids (all US citizens) holding 75%, so that he doesn't breach FAA rules on foreign ownership. If (big 'IF') he gets US DOT approval to fly (and remember he will have to follow US rules on accounting - which should be fun given that United Breweries makes only ONE percent profit margins - on alcohol) he can operate to India under the new open skies treaty. There are issues with the stopover country, but with PeePee signing ATA's left, right and centre, that shouldn't be a issue either.
Two, Kingfisher will launch five daily DEL-BOM flights on August 15 (or thereabouts) at Rs 3,333 plus PSF (Rs 221).
