DL MD-90 Routes

As you can tell i am a fan of the McDD MD-90 I was wondering what are some of the routes that DL uses them on I knonw that they are mainly used on routes out of SLC. Does Delta only use it out of SLC, do the MD-88's have problems there??or could they be used on Carribean routes , or the MD's arent suited for the routes and climate because also AS has problems with them in Mexico and do AA use them from MIA-Carribean or they are just DFW/ORD-Westcoast.

They use them mostly from SLC, although not exclusively. I know they run SLC-ORD and SLC-MSP, right now, I believe, and they are also used on SLC-SAN, SLC-SNA, and SLC-PDX. But they sometimes make their way over to the East Coast and have been regulars on CVG-ATL and ATL-DFW. They are very worthwhile in areas with noise abatements and high altitude airports.

last time I was in PDX I saw an "MD90" on finals, I soon noticed, its in delta's colors, but the engines are small...As you can guess it finally landed and turned out to be a MD88...however, according to the timetable this was just a plane swap for DL937 which orriginates it CVG... Emphasis once again, this is usually a 90 for 937 which flies CVG-SLC-PDX

I sure that if you do a photo search and look where they were taken ,It might be able to help you on you quest. As for solid info , sorry can't help you there  Sad , I'm sure if i was American i might be able too.

I think they are also used on SLC-DEN and for sure they are regulars at Southern California airports

I've flown them several times from SLC-SEA.

Last night, I searched Delta's lower fares from ORD to SAT. It shows connecting flights in SLC. Delta is returning mainline route SLC-SAT on a MD90 in October 28th! I am trying to find fare to see my mother lives in SAT. It surprises me that Delta return mainline route in the fall. Today they're using 3x CRJ700 between SLC and SAT.

AS, and AA, both don't have MD90s. AA had the 90 for a short time when they got QQ's 90s. AA does not use their S80s on any Caribbean route except for NAS which is pretty close to South Florida, and does not require overwater rafts. AA's S80 is used all over the place. They used to fly 90s out of FLL for the DFW flights when they existed.

DL was running them DFW-SEA when they had the hub and they maybe still
runing them SLC-SEA but I have not seen one at SEA lately.

After DFW's shut-down, some MD-90s found new homes in ATL and CVG, There is a ATL-ORD daily, CVG-PHX, ATL-CVG, CVG-DEN, and i am sure there are others, however i think they all rotate through SLC... such as

DL 521 ATL-ORD turns as
DL 971 ORD-SLC (3:58pm-5:00pm at ORD)

Sorry I meant MD-8X series aircraft,I meant Alaska Airlines Md-80 family aircraft had problems down in mexico, they never operated MD-90 but orderded dome but got 73G's instead. As you mentioned when AA had them they were acquired from Reno Air, one route I know they were used on was SNA-SJC and AA returned them in 2001 and now some are going to Lion Air in Indonesia..

There's also a -90 routed ATL-ORD-CVG (and undergoing m/x in ORD overnight I assume as it RONs) as DL 722 ATL-ORD and 915 the next morning.
I can't decide whether I miss the tulip or the bowling shoe more

the only pilot base for MD-90 differences trained md-88 pilots is now SLC, it used to be dfw but they closed that one obviously...so this really doesn't answer the question asked, but shows that if you see an md-90 anywhere in the country its a slc based flt crew.

The M90's are primarily based out of SLC but have spread out through the system recently. They are a good A/C choice for hot and high environments you often find out west. They are also good for noise sensitive airports like SNA.

Currently DL flies M90's to ATL, BWI, CVG, DEN, DFW, LAS, LAX, MSY, ONT, ORD, PDX, PHX, SEA, SLC, SMF, and SNA.

Yeah, they're great for all that sound and high altitude stuff, but they don't have enough F class seats. (only 12 F seats) DL's similar sized aircraft, the MD-88 and the 738, have 14 and 16 F seats respectively. The MD-90 makes upgrades a bit tricky  Smile

Having said that, I think the F cabin in the MD-90 has to be the quietest F cabin in all of DL's fleet. And the MD-90 has more comfortable F seats than it's sister, the MD-88. This aircraft is truly a joy flying SNA-SLC. It pops off the runway in SNA like a rocket. Very fun ride for sure!

If they added four more seats to the F cabin in the MD-90, it would be my favorite DL domestic aircraft!

Up until about 2002-2003, when DL basically turned DFW into an RJ hub, DFW seemed to be DL MD90 central. Any particular reason why? Did DFW handle maintenance on the planes? Were they particularly suited for the DFW market in some way? Thanks in advance.

DL uses an MD-90 from ONT to DFW daily. I flew on that flight twice in 02. They were very smooth and I loved the takeoffs Big grin

I'm not sure if it is still operating today - but I know recently I flew SFO - SLC on one.

delta has pilot bases for different types of airplanes all over the country. in nyc they have the 737G,737-800,MD-88, and 767ER.(international only) Other planes passing through the nyc can overnight but the crews for a 737-200 or 757 are not based in nyc.
the md-90 flys the entire delta system mostly to noise sensitive or high altitude airports that can't justify 757's but is only piloted by crews based in SLC. The reason is that the MD-90 requires annual differences training from the MD-88 and delta doesn't want to send all the pilots that fly the 120 md-88's to 2 additional days of annual training for the 14 or whatever md-90's that are in the system..
on a side note, it can become a mess when an md-90 crew is supposed to do an airplane swap and is running late. there can be 3 atl, cvg, or nyc based md-88 crews standing there, but none of them are qualified to fly the jet due to the lack of differences training.

I work for Alaska and we don't have any problems with the MD80's in Mexico. We fly them nonstop from PVR/SJD/MZT/ZLO and sometimes ZIH to LAX/SFO/SEA/SJC. I've NEVER heard of us having any load problems with MD's down there at all. It's possible it has happened but it would be a very rare exception.

We also never ordered the MD90's to my knowledge although, to be fair, I'm not completely confident in this. Back when we started taking deliveries of the 73G's, we weren't able to convert orders from MD90's to 73G's as Boeing and McDonnell Douglas were two completely different companies and you couldn't just change your mind and choose another if you had existing orders, unless you had some kind of language written to that effect in your purchase order.

I'd suspect it was because of McDD being taken over, and a subsequent switch to 73Gs and 739s.

AS cancelled their MD-90 order in favor of 734's. This decision took place in or around 1994 I believe. I was working for AS in 97 and noticed they had desktop models of MD-90's in their offices. Naturally I asked and was told they decided on Boeing's at the last minute.

As to why they cancelled...... I can only guess it was due to the V-2500's? I know the IAE's had "teething" problems about the time the decision was made. The 734 had been in reliable service with other airlines since 1988-89.
