Media Hype Of Aircraft Incidents

Sun Jul 31, 2005 4:52 am

I have been reading these two threads regarding relatively minor occurrences that the media seem to have blown out of proportion. I was wondering if anybody had other examples of reckless reporting of aircraft incidents that have unfairly tarnished the image of the airline involved.

The threads... AI overun... and AC RTO... Definitely could have been worse, but not altogether unusual occurrences

Er...I wouldn't start throwing stones at the media. Spotters on this and other forums are frequently the first to start blowing regular go-arounds out of proportion and making them seem like major emergencies.

My apologies if that is how I came off. I am interested to see cases people may know of damage to an airlines image due to sensationalist reporting. In no way did I mean to imply that all media coverage is sensationalist or that the media alone is responsible for inaccuracies.

Not to mention the media usually goes straight for "eye" witnesses that have no idea what went on. Media will say what they are told because they don't know any better. They lack the concept that for every plane that crashes there are 399,999 that don't.
Good Luck to all Skyway Pilots! It's been great working with you!
