Top Gear (Car Show) Race Track Aerodrome

Mon Aug 01, 2005 5:27 am

Hi Folks,

Top Gear, the BBC television Car Show, does a regular feature with celebrity driver racing around a "Race Track".

The race track is a di-used airfield somewhere in the UK.

If you look carefully during the Lap, you will see what looks like an all white B747 parked in a corner of the airfield. (look Carefully)

My question is:

1. Does anyone know which airport/airfield this is?
2. Does anyone have info on the aircraft? - I'm sure its a 747

Thanks

It is the old Hawker Siddley airfield at Dunsfold, in Surrey. Dunno what the 74 is though. I thought it had been closed once BAe pulled out.

Hi,

The aircraft is (I believe) a european B747-236. If you search the airfield you will find pictures of it landing there earlier this year.

Dunsfold, 3 minutes down the road from me. Its the old BAe base, we used to get a lot of harriers fly over. Aircraft is a B747-200, G-BDXJ, ex BA, European and finally, Air Atlanta Europe.

This is the jet in question:

It has been bought by Dunsfold Park as part of its collection.

Yes it is a 747 , I believe it's ex-BA 742 G-BDXJ, The racing track is indeed at Dunsford, It's only use now is as a film/program prop. It did a final ferry flight from LGW under the call sign "SnowBird 1P" on MAY 25th 2005 and i believe it's still their, however the last photo taken of it in the data base was on June 4th ( i think)

Happy Flying !!  wave
