Cactus Upgrade To MEX?!

Mon Aug 01, 2005 4:04 pm

According to AW.com, HP it will upgrade the afternoon flight AWA174 (now) to B757, in it's site it even appears a new number (AWA188) from PHX to MEX this is, effectively Oct 2nd, 2005 and still show B757s flights till December. Will it be seasonal or will it continue?

WOW. Good news, let's hope it continues. I always thought PHX-MEX was a 757 route for the home airline. During the holidays, AM should be using 757s to PHX (just my opinion)

Don't worry...everything should change again in a month and a half as the merger will be official and HP will begin flying as US Airways. Aircraft should stay the same, but the flight number obviously will likely change.  Smile

Not for a very long time. HP and US will remain separate operational airlines for a few years after the merger.

HP flights will still use the Cactus callsign and flight numbers.

HP flights will continue to use the Cactus callsign while the HP certificate exists, but they'll switch to having a block of US* flight numbers. The flights will be marketed as "US Airways operated by America West Airlines". It's really no different than, say, having US flight numbers 2600-2999 reserved "US Airways Express operated by Mesa Airlines"; they operate with the US* code even though they're clearly on the YV certificate.
I'm the expert on here on two things, neither of which I care about much anymore.

I haven't been closely following the merger deal. I understand that US brand will prevail at the end, yet for how long will HP keep its CS and name?

I'm surely going to miss them once they are gone for good.

I remember this flight back when it was a single daily in a B733. The increase in capacity means that there must be recognition that PHX is a growing transborder market. Why has AM or MX missed opportunities here for nonstops from MEX?

Yeap! Such a shame to see HP go! I'll also miss it! UsAirways brand will prevail but I think they will have a new c/s! I also read that the B733/4/B762 fleet will disappear, the only Boeing's staying longer will be the B752s. Hopefully during these months I can spot the 13 rego's!!

Right, HP started the flight with a B733, they later upgrade to A319 followed by an A320, then, 9/11th came and things got worse and went back to B733, lately, traffic improved and they switch to A319 and added a second early morning flight with B733 which has also been upgraded to A319. Flight in the afternoon is sometimes flown by A320. But we will now have Aibus in the morning and B752 during the afternoon!

AM has also increased their presence at PHX. IIRC they have 2X from MEX with MD80s plus the one via HMO and I think there was or there still is one via GDL.

At least AM/HP are lucky to have 6A away from PHX. A long time ago, or probably still is the plan to fly to PHX via MTY.

Actually, the morning departure HP457 MEX-PHX and the evening departure HP175 PHX-MEX are just seasonal and will stop in September leaving only one daily B757 flight till the next high season (december).

HP has been flying 1 x daily to MEX for some time now. They increases to 2 x daily on peak seasons.

HP was not lucky enough to have 6A out of LAS and had to discontinue flights LAS-MEX-LAX due to stron competition...

Hey Rojo, that wasn't me man. Anyway, I rather see MX or Azteca than Aviacsa at PHX. Anybody know HP's Mexican destinations?

Also, don't forget the daily PHX-MTY run on HPX that lasted from Oct.2003 to Oct.2004. The route mysteriously did not work out for them.

Ed more or less cleared up the point I was trying to make. Yes they will remain on the respective certs for a few years...but the HP name and flight numbers will be redone to US Airways. Much like TWA/AA.

Last I've seen target date for closing the merger is Sept. 15th - or around there. This is just from a financial aspect as the operational merger will take a couple years. From everything stated, on that date the America West name will cease to be used expect in an "operated by" format. It also sounds like a new color scheme should be unvieled soon as well keeping the red, white and blue colors...but more stress on white. The Darth Vader scheme is going bye bye unfortunately.  Smile

Where did you hear that, just curious. They haven't told us anything except they were thinking about changing it.

Cool thanks for the link. They did tell us (without giving too much away) that a tribute to all the airlines that made up US Airways and America West will be done....wonder what it will be?

What changed? Did the ramp workers make their claim clear that the current US Airways livery would be very hot in PHX and LAS? Or did someone in marketing make their case clear? Anyway, I hope they will come up with a new livery that is classy. I have a question though. Southwest's paint job has no white and they have large stations in PHX and LAS. Do their employees complain about the livery and it's affect on the heat inside the aircraft?
