Delta Applies For ATL-PVR

Tue Aug 02, 2005 1:39 am

Delta will further expand its list of vacation destinations from Atlanta. Today they filed with the US DOT for daily, year-round service 737-800 service between Atlanta and Puerto Vallarta. Docket:

No surprise to see more international expansion. Hopefully, more of these routes will improve DL's finances during the winter months (when traffic levels are weakest). The only concern I have is that many of these "fun and sun" markets are getting flooded with capacity, which may eventually kill the yields.

I'm not totally sure if DL can sustain year-round service to PVR. I think having daily SLC-PVR and ATL-PVR will be a little bit of overkill during the off-peak season.

With SLC having service to SJD, MZT*, PVR, CUN and ATL having service to CUN, CZM, SJD, PVR*, the only major Mexican resort towns still missing from DL's system are Acapulco and Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo.

* pending gov't approval

Take the increased fleet utilization and throw it into International. That seems to be the new route stategy. PVR was always in demand from the East Coast but always difficult to serve because of the connection in MEX, or some overnight flight fron ONT.

Could see EMB-170 service to these two from SLC (Saturday-only) and 738 service from ATL (at least Saturday-only).

Phew. I was worried DL wasn't going to add yet another spoke from ATL. And yes, I am being sarcastic.

A bit off topic, Didn't Comair or ASA used to fly to MTY, whatever happened to that?

One more thing, how many Mexican destinations from all airports does Delta/ASA/Comair have? just trying to figure out where they stand against CAL, AA, HP, and UAL.

ASA stilly flies that route ATL-MTY 2x daily. It used to be 3x daily, however.

It even were 4 flights most of the time, on the 40-seat CRJs. Never understood the need for 4 flights, as loads just svcked (below 50%).

I could  Wink . But looking at all the certification problems at Republic/Shuttle America, I even have my doubts about the applied-for SLC-MZT route.

This should be a good overview:
MEX (ATL 2x 757; JFK 757)
CUN (ATL 763, 9xweekly 738; CVG 738; SLC 738; MCO 738*)
GDL (ATL 738; LAX 738)
MTY (ATL 2xCRJ)
CZM (ATL SaSu-only 738)
PVR (ATL 738; SLC 738 eff Nov 1st)
SJD (SLC CR7 in off-season, 738 in high-season; ATL seasonal 738)
MZT (SLC E70*)
*indicates applied for routes.

It was done by DL up until last year. DL at one time had just about every Mexican destination served from LAX after the Western merger.
It's a big building with patients, but that's not important right now.

Well correct me if I am wrong (which I am sure many will  Wink ) but for USA airlines, AA is #1 in terms of pax to Mexico and CO is #1 in terms of destinations served-- as IAH is slowly becoming Mexico's biggest hub  Wink
not sure about #s 3 and 4 but I am sure MAH/mark knows.

Good for Delta BTW!

What about DL's strong codeshare alliance with AM? I think DL would do well in PVR as they did from LAX after they took it over from Western but then I believe took that over along with the rest and DL code shared. I have a feeling LAX-GDL-LAX days are numbered.

LACA773, you really think LAX-GDL will be suspended soon? Sometimes it seems that GDL does better than MEX on a couple of routes.

MEX is a very important destination from LAX, but I think that the mayority of the Mexican population in California comes from those areas that are within a day's road trip from GDL. Because there is a lot of competition to GDL and because it has developed a good road infrastructure with its neighboring states it serves as the primary gateway to the central highlands of Mexico. It is the same story for those flights coming into GDL from the Chicago area.

I wonder if DL would do well to Acapulco. According to my brother, there is quite a large community of people living in ATL from the state of Guerrero. But being that these are recent immigrants that have arrived within the last 10-15 years or so, it is highly probable that a good percentile of this community is residing illegaly in the area and thus does not have the ability to travel back home. A good and bad thing for Mexico - the good is that these are the kind of people that send the most in monetary aid back home.
