More Trouble For LAX

Wed Aug 03, 2005 12:19 am

LAX is planning to move 25L/7R 50 feet further to the south to avoid runway incursions which are all to common for inbound planes crossing into 25R/7L after landing. The majority of runway incursions occur on the south side of the field.

The recent EIR (Environmental Impact Report) has indicated that noise pollution and emission pollution will be increased in the area during construction as traffic is redistributed to the remaining 3 runways. The fact trumped up in the local media is an increased cancer risk predicted as a result of this traffic change.

The planned construction will be approved, despite some media and NIMBY buzz around the draft report.

Two observations I have from this recent development:

1. Once again, LA politics and public perception appears to be trending away from the much needed expansion of LAX. A bad sign for the future of this city IMHO.

2. During runway closure can we expect a nightmare traffic situation at LAX? Will airlines add ground time to their schedules to compensate? Will there be a time when everything to/from LAX will be delayed?

Everyone who lives near LAX that complain about aircraft noise or pollution, don't complain when they are using LAX for travel.  confused

Actually both the north and south runways will be relocated, with a taxiway running down the middle of the runways.

The Southern 25L runway construction of more controversial as its closer to the folks in El Segundo, while the northern 24R rebuild will be over current Lincoln Blvd and empty airport owned property along Westchester Parkway

LAX operating on 3 runways is not a new thing. Every decade or so one of the runways close for several months during resurfacing work.

Does anybody know when the work on the 25L runway will start?
Planning a trip to the famous hill on El Segundo later in the year, would be a shame to be there at the same time if Runway 25L is closed.
If runway 25L is closed what will the movements on 25R be, mainly take offs or landings or will it be an even split? I'd hate it to be just the one type, and preferably take offs.
I like the general overview that you get from this location and whilst I go over to the Inn N Out burger joint on the northside it is nice to chill out on the hill.
Flying may not be all plain sailing, but the fun of it is worth the price.
