Refundable Group Sales To RDU,FLL,MCO

Wed Aug 03, 2005 3:09 am

Hi,
What I am looking for is airlines flying JFK/LGA/ISP-RDU on November 17-20th. I am helping booking the flights for my sisters soccer team. We need refundable tickets because if the team doesn't get in the tournament then we will need to get our money back, we want to book early for good fares.

I also need JFK/LGA/ISP-MCO (Dec. 29-Jan 2)
and JFK/LGA/ISP-FLL (Dec 26-Dec 30/31) We haven't decided where to go for those dates (MCO or FLL)

* We need to be at RDU by 8pm on Nov 17*

Also we flew Southwest last year to Florida and it was great but Southwest doesn't let you book that far off (Only to Dec 12th as of now) and I want to explore our other options. We flew American last year to RDU (Remember we will have to connect and we don't mind) and it was ok but the small planes were a setback. I was thinking Southwest through BWI but I want to know other options.

We have 40 people to take so...

Thank you so much!

Oh yea, forgot to mention, if we do need to be split up onto smaller planes, it is ok but just make sure the flights are close each other (doesn't matter if different airlines).

Sorry forgot that.

Why don't you go talk to a travel agent. They can usually get you a good deal when you are traveling in a group. When you can be for sure about traveling it would probably be cheaper to charter a plane.

Your best bet would be to call airlines and ask them, not us.

DL offers 3x daily JFK, 6x daily LGA.. AE offers 6x daily JFK, 10x daily LGA.. USX offers 6x daily LGA.. There is plenty to choose from.. You can probably split them between 2 or 3 different airlines and all get in @ the same time..

We prefer not to use Travel Agencies, we are just scouting it out on the internet and then calling the airlines. I just want to get it down to certain airlines then call them.

Yea we were thinking of splitting it between some, but DL refundable tickets are outrageously expensive.

Thanks

All refundable tickets are. Sorry to say, your out of luck. Refundable tickets are expensive regardless of when you buy them. Bargain basement refundable fares are very far and few between.

Southwest's refundable fares are the cheapest you will get, and they can get you to where you need to go from ISP.

How soon would you know whether you've made the tournament?

Most airline's group ticket policies require names 28-days prior to departure usually with a small deposit then the ticketing time limit 7 days after that. So if you really really need it, providing you know exactly what will happen 3 weeks prior, you should have no problem.

With 40 pax I suggest you plan quick, esp if you will be flying in a pretty busy time. Talk to a travel agent or directly to the groups department of the airlines that serve your home city and the destination. Good luck!!!

This is SOOOO why you need to use a travel agent. No offense, but you don't have the first clue what you're asking for. Refundable tickets are hugely expensive. That's the price you pay for refundability. Group bookings are no real bargain to the airline. In essense, you're looking to tie up seats at a lower price than the airline could sell them for individually. As a general rule, you are required to send in a deposit within 14 days of blocking the space. Some airlines will allow you to refund the deposit without penalty if you cancel 60 or more days prior to departure. Many airlines now (especially for purely domestic travel) require totally nonrefundable deposits. Final names and ticket purchase is normally due in full 30 days prior to departure.

In essense, no airline is going to allow you to block seats that may or may not be used, and allow you to cancel without a substantial penalty. If you are not 100% certain of making the tournament, you're going to be stuck with very expensive airfares. You better start those bake sales and raffles right now!
It's been swell, but the swelling has gone down.

They let us do it last year so I was wondering if we can do the same this year. Southwest let us block the seats for MCO and FLL (separate dates last year) and American let us do it for RDU, so... I guess I will just book on AA and WN. AA's refundable tickets weren't that bad. DL had $1,000+ for each passenger and AA was much lower, like in $300's per person.

AA and WN it is.

I agree with PA110. This is what travel agents do for a living. Use one. But understand that no airline likes to block cheap seats that you may not use, and then be stuck with them.
