JetBlue's New Larger TV Screens

Last night, JetBlue took delivery of A/C #618, equipped with new bigger screens.
The new screens are 6.8 inches long diagonally (the current screens are 5.6) and
are among the largest in the domestic coach industry. Jet Blue will be
retrofitting its entire fleet with the new screens in time for the holidays.
They will only upgrade 1/4 of the PTVs on each plane at a time (Doing the whole
plane at once would require the A/C to be out of service for more than one night
which means less $$). So basically you could be on a JetBlue flight over the
next few months that 78 small screens, 78 large ones. The whole E190 fleet will
come equipped with the larger screens. The old screens will
be sold to Virgin Blue and put on their planes (funny because Richard Branson
and David Neeleman have somewhat of a tense relationship).
Source:Undisclosed Source but Very Reliable
Sounds great! Can't wait to see them on the planes!
Enjoy.

I'd heard that the resolution is exactly the same as the smaller tv's, can anyone confirm that? Basically, it would be like taking a digital picture and blowing it up, the image loses clarity.

Well, it is not that bad. The pixel size will increase, yes. But it will proably still be fine. It is like with computer screen, there are laptop computers equiped with 15" 1400x1050 screens, whereas desktop TFT screens 17" @ 1280x1024 are still very sharp (and IMO even better, I am working on one too

Actually, that's exactly what they AREN'T doing here. They are not taking a digital picture and blowing it up.
Considering NTSC
TV is 640x480 (using square pixels) I would assume they would always use a 640x480 screen, so as NOT to lose clarity. There is NO benefit of using an 800x600 screen or larger on NTSC material. Using a 1:1 ratio screen for 'live
TV' is the optimal way to go, at 6", 16" or 26" diagonal. Only for higher resolution sources, or for pristine DVDs and a quality scaling program, would a denser screen be desirable. But DirecTV is notoriously bad on many channels with compression artifacts, including many channels
B6 buys, and adding scaling on top of that would be a bad, bad move.
Basically, you need to learn more about this topic before criticizing
B6 for doing the right thing.

I'd hardly say that was criticism. It was phrased as a question, and just because I didn't grease the pole of
B6 doesn't mean I was bashing them. I'd originally heard that comment from someone who saw the screens over 6 months ago, and wanted clarification since it's being rolled out now. I wouldn't be so thin skinned, it is a discussion forum.

Ok so everyone discuss then, don't just yell at each other. Not being mean.

And this is good because then we have bugger edge over our competitor and once
XM comes on, then all they have different is games, and a smaller screen, and we have what they have, more radio stations and a larger screen.

Wrong. The production stage is much higher and the broadcast stage is much lower. I think you're trying to refer to DirecTV.
Quoting Ikramerica (Reply 18): There is NO benefit of using an 800x600 screen or larger on NTSC material. |
My guess is that Jetblue is buying whatever is on the market instead of saying "We want to pay a lot more for a certain specific size with a certain specific resolution because we think we know more about video screens than the supplier does."
Quoting Ikramerica (Reply 18): But DirecTV is notoriously bad on many channels with compression artifacts, including many channels B6 buys, and adding scaling on top of that would be a bad, bad move. |
This has to do more with available

native resolution.

Maybe you should re-examine your own facts.
Fact: NTSC stands for National Television System Committee
Fact: The NTSC has defined standards for broadcast quality video in countries including the USA since 1953. You don't get to argue with them.
Fact: The NTSC defines a standard definition digital video feed (exactly like *gasp* that which DirecTV offers) as an interlaced stream of luminance and color information at a resolution of 720x480 pixels which plays at a rate of 29.97 frames per second, most of which can be displayed on any given television screen.
Fact: There is no point in having a digital screen like JetBlue uses on board capable of displaying any more than 720 pixels horizontally and 480 pixels vertically, regardless of its physical size.
Fact: Having a screen with lower resolution is a detriment to the video stream.
I am pleased that JetBlue finds itself in the position to upgrade its IFE when many carriers can't get any on board in the first place. Clearly they are doing something right.

Quoting AbirdA (Reply 28): Fact: NTSC stands for National Television System Committee |
Who was questioning this in the first place?
Quoting AbirdA (Reply 28): Fact: The NTSC has defined standards for broadcast quality video in countries including the USA since 1953. You don't get to argue with them. |
According to wikipedia, they were formed in 1940 by the FCC and they've been defining standards since 1941. I think I'll go with wiki on this one.
Quoting AbirdA (Reply 28): Fact: The NTSC defines a standard definition digital video feed (exactly like *gasp* that which DirecTV offers) as an interlaced stream of luminance and color information at a resolution of 720x480 pixels which plays at a rate of 29.97 frames per second, most of which can be displayed on any given television screen. |
The broadcast signal itself is 525i analog lines. After removing the sync, vertical retrace, and captioning lines, you have a 480i analog video signal. When Ikramerica mentioned '640x480' he left out the 'i' (interlaced) at the end. This may sound like a trivial omission, but a 480 and a 480i signal are not the same thing. These days you will find non-interlaced compatibility listed as '480p' (progressive) in electronics stores to help customers tell the difference. In addition, broadcast NTSC analog signals have an effective practical resolution that is significantly less than even a true 640x480i signal due to distortion introduced between the transmission source and receiving device. Also, from what I understand, television pixels are not exactly square, so 640x480i is really more of an approximation you get from applying a 4:3 aspect ratio to the 480i signal. Although you can buy NTSC DVD's with television programs at a resolution of 640x480i, this is not the standard broadcast image. It has probably been sourced from the digital master tape instead. If you record onto a DVD recorder from a broadcast NTSC signal and then compare it to a store-bought DVD of the same show you will see what I'm referring to.
Side note: The 720x480 that many people associate with DVD's leaves out the DAR (Display Aspect Ratio) flag. A 4:3 'pan & scan' picture comes out of the DVD player at roughly 640x480 and a 16:9 'widescreen' picture comes out of the DVD player at something like 853x480. 720x480 refers only to the encoded data and with the exception of the unused 1:1 DAR, not the actual output.
Quoting AbirdA (Reply 28): Fact: There is no point in having a digital screen like JetBlue uses on board capable of displaying any more than 720 pixels horizontally and 480 pixels vertically, regardless of its physical size. |
I did not know that standard mini-
LCD displays came with a native resolution of 720x480. When I've looked around, this is what I've found for
LCD's below 7":
280x220, 320x234, 382x234, 384x234, 480x234, 600x234, 1024x600
These are the sort of
LCD's that you might find in portable DVD players and car audio/video systems.
Quoting AbirdA (Reply 28): Fact: Having a screen with lower resolution is a detriment to the video stream. |
As with 'Fact: #1' I get the feeling you're just arguing with yourself here.

Hey All,
For anyone interested in knowing more about the history of JetBlue, definitely read "Blue Streak : Inside jetBlue, the Upstart that Rocked an Industry." It's a great read - I read it a couple months back. It has all the info about Neeleman's background, starting JetBlue, and some great background on some of the "knick-knack" information like the acquisition of LiveTV, etc. Check it out!
