Looks like their are thunderstorms in the vincinity of YOW right now. SYR would be a bit closer and has appropriate customs and immigrations facilities.

I wish that SWF would get some of these diversions...

They also said that BUF was a potential diversion destination.

Most diversions are going to Montreal, including British Airways, Malev, and Aeroflot. The inbound AC 340-500 from Hong Kong is diverted to Winnipeg, as are most inbound flights from the West, including AC's Tokyo inbound.

Damn, those passengers on that plane must be going crazy! I hope the situation -while waiting- is bearable. I'm surprised they didn't continue to Chicago, Montreal or New York where KLM has its own crews...just in case.

I think in view of what happened any passengers diverted would accept this.

Wouldn't DTW be better. It's a KLM/NW hub.

Anyone know how Immigration gets handled at this point...I mean its certainly sad for something liek this to happen but for those who are in the hospitals do they have police officers all around to make sure no one escapes?

They couldn't divert to DTW. They didn't have the fuel.

KLM declared a fuel emergency just after they were advised that the airport closed. They requested direct clearence to SYR, ATC suggested YHM, but KLM preferred SYR for some reason. Couldn't make it out on the ATC archive.

Is the plane still in SYR? And if it is, any idea on when it is supposed to depart?

I'm going to be heading down to Syracuse tomorrow morning, I might just swing by the airport if I have 5 extra minutes.

they were i think number 2 to the Air France and were advised they would have to divert, i think when they aborted the approach they made a right turn and the pilot of KL was clearly heard saying that SYR was directly ahead of them and that they preferred to land there instead of turning back.

Looks like Aerosweet and Martinair also diverted to YOW along with a BA 747-400 and 777. El Al 106 appears to have gone to Hamilton. LTU went to Niagara Falls and 2 AC A319s from Montego Bay and Havana (983 & 989) diverted to Windsor.

I hope the KLM pax in SYR were permitted to disembark, or did they spend 4 hours sitting in that 744?

They would have to go through US Immigration. So I rather think they remained onboard.

But someone said that was the whole reason they went to SYR in the lengthy thread. When I was flying an SV747300 we were diverted to Gander, NF, on our way to JFK. We were allowed to disembark and visit the gift shop, toilets and cafe, as we were on the ground for a several hours.

PS - did anyone get a picture of it at SYR?

I'm only hazarding a guess...Generally speaking US airports are not designed for international transfer traffic. You arrive...you go through imms/customs. There aren't really facilities to hold (quarantine) passengers in the terminal without having them go through the US imms/customs.

Much of the rest of the world have a set-up whereby internationally arriving folks can disembark into the airport without visiting the authorities first.

When I worked at BWI we had a int'l flight divert there. It arrived before the customs hall opened so no one was permitted to disembark. They remained with the aircraft until it was dispatched to JFK.

I've never been to SYR, but my guess would be that the passengers would remain on board unless they were to go through the gov't formalities.

DAMN! I should have flown to SYR instead of BGM this afternoon... I just came back from Vienna!

I really wish someone was there to take photos.

Edit: I just got my first chance to surf the net in 24 hours, missed the whole Air France thing, which I guess it the cause of the diversion. Didn't mean to be unsympathetic, I just read this thread before reading about the YYZ incident.

Well the 747 @ SYR made the local news. Right after the new baby elephant at the zoo.

In case anyone cares it was PH-BFN, and the spotters were out at the airport. They got one of them on the news (Time Warner News 10 Now for you upstaters).

http://www.liveatc.net/.archive/ksyr/KSYR-Aug-02-05-1630.mp3 (right from the beginning)

"443 souls onboard" They had a missed approach too.

I love how the news10 article doesn't make the connection between the Toronto incident and the diversion of the KLM flight. It's even funnier because they mention the AF incident later in the article, but as an entirely separate thing.
