El Al Adds Another 767-300 To Fleet

Thu Aug 04, 2005 4:38 am

From May 2006 El Al will operate a second 767-300. The deal was closed this week. El Al has been searching for two widebodies to lease for a while now. It was even looking into leasing an Airbus if available.
This a/c will be the second of two a/c that are suppose to join the fleet in the coming year. El Al had also closed a deal on leasing a 737 that is scheduled to join in November. The 737 will get a registartion 4X-EKO.

Other news is that Israir plans to operate a direct charter flight to BKK from TLV from Spring 2006. They plan to operate the flight on Saturdays.

Hopefully they can get another aircraft soon. MIA is supposed to start operating non-stop in November pending aircraft availability.

Interesting - good to see EL AL expanding.

Any idea of where the 763ER is coming from?

And, which type of 737NG is being added to the fleet, EL AL currently has the 73G and 738 in its fleet. And, the source of this aircraft?

JFK is already served by many 747's!
Today for example: (3rd)
TLV-JFK - LY001 - 772
TLV-JFK - LY033 - 744
TLV-JFK - LY007 - 744
TLV-JFK - LY011 - 744

Israir does not have any 747's, the only widebody they currnetly have is one 767-300.

hey guys!
some inside info~
Israir is planning on getting two widebody aircraft to expand the route to new york and make it a normal route and not a season-line..
what i know is that they are looking into Airbus either A330 or A340..
currently the route to JFK is jam packed and theyre doing suprisingly well compared to the competitors (LY and CO).
as for El Al planes-The 763Er will come from Atlanta Air Icelandic,i have no info on the new 73X that is scheduled to arrive..
happy flying  Smile

What do you mean? I find it hard to believe that they are doing better than LY and CO...

On a side note, anybody know what happened to the two Israir pilots who were involved with the near collision at JFK?

Is ISrair state owned? If it is, it will be a cold day in hell before they choose Airbus over Boeing, what with the money the US gov gives Israel every year. Please note I'm not try to start an forum war here, political or A vs B.  whiteflag

Even if you dont want to start a war, you probably will.

Isair is a private company, and if they were to acquire an A330/340, it will probably be via a lease and it will probably be a second hand aircraft, so its very unlikely that the US would make a fuss over the the acquisition of an Airbus aircraft.

Its well known that there was US govt interference when EL AL was to purchase the A330 - the entire matter probably got blown out of proportion by the media in general and even more so here at a.net because, in principal, I think most enthusiasts hate the idea of political interference and we want airlines to be able to purchase the aircraft that they really want without other considerations. In the real world, governments and politicians do stick their noses into things like aircraft orders because lots of money and jobs are involved - it happens much more than we like. Over the years, Boeing, Airbus, the US govt and the EU govts have all done things that they probably should not have done when aircraft orders were at stake.....I guess we just have to accept it as part of the game.

Very soon Israir's charter flights to JFK will become scheduled. From there you will see Arkia joining in. In addition to the 737NG being acquired by ELAL there is going to be one more leased for a total of 2. I am a bit surprised noone has mentioned Easyjets plans of starting intl lowcost service to europe via tel aviv.

Israir is full because they offer the cheapest fares compared to El Al and CO. I had not heard that Easyjet will fly to TLV. That would be great. And as to a colision at JFK also I had not heard.

If Israir lease a plane from Airbus it may be OK but buying is another matter. They already operate the ATR on domestic flights. So do Arkia.

And as to a colision at JFK also I had not heard.

It's been a fairly big news item here in NY. There have been several stories in the past few weeks about the danger of runway incursions.

Here is the thread from the near collision:
http://www.airliners.net/discussions...eneral_aviation/read.main/2230255/

Basically, around 2 AM on a night of rain and fog, an Israir 767 missed the taxiway turn and instead turned on to the active runway. An empty DC-8 was taking off at the time. Thank god the co-pilot had decided to apply full power because of the fog and that the plane was ferrying back empty to it's base, so it was able to lift off and cleared the Israir 767 by about 100 feet!!!

It seems as they are replacing the "old" Tower Air on this market , with cheap prices.Hope their reliability and security are better !!!!!!!

The near collision occured at JFK.

Some extracts out of the Flight Int'l article.

-The Kennedy incident involving an ABX Air DC8 freighter and an Israir 767-300ER

-In heavy rain which degraded the effectiveness of the airport surface detector system...........

-At about 01:40LT the 767 with 12 crew and 250 passengers on board , was cleared to taxi to runway 22R via taxiway H , turning left on to B.But the 767 missed the left turn and crossed 22R without clearance.Meanwhile the DC8 had been cleared to take off on 22R , but the pilot did not see the 767 until they had already passed decision speed and had to continue , roitating vigorously to improve the angle of climb.

-ABX Air says the crew estimated it missed the 767's fuselage by about 14m (45ft).

-The ABX captain said the 767 was cleared only because the DC8 was empty and the co pilot -the pilot flying- had decided to use full power at take off because of the weather.

It's just El Al. European Airlines and Continental fly on Friday/Saturday. And El Al is supposedly going to start flying on Shabbat.

i wonder when EL AL will be finally free to choose the real type of aircraft she needs without the political size to consider..For the next generation of aircraft coming the choice between the 787 or 747AV and the A350/ A380 will be once again another dilema..Now that EL AL is privatized she shoud get more independance on that matter . LY with one or two A380 ..Why not?.Well that would be a perfect fit on the TLV/JFK and on the TLV /CDG leg also.

I think the reason no one mentioned it was because it is far from being final.
If you are referring to the article that was in the paper yesterday, all it was saying was that some low cost european airlines MIGHT start service to TLV soon. I even think the article stated that there was a good chance AIR Berlin might be the first.

El Al is now privatized, so they are free to order what they want. However, fleet wise, it does make sense for them to stick with Boeing. The 787 is the perfect replacement for the 767s and a great choice for expansion. The 777NGs are the leaders in their class if they choose to go for them. And the A380, while being perfect for JFK runs, might just be too large overall. There's really no reason for an airline to order a 380, even if they have a few routes that could justify it.

I find the seats on A 300, A330 and A340 very uncomfortable; narrow. Thanks for the info on the near collision. Reminds me of the actual KLM / Pan Am B747 colision at Las Palmas 20 years ago. Now I am going to be scared everytime I land at JFK in the fog!!

ISR971 WILL DEPART FOR BKK AT 10:30 ON FRIDAY, THE A/C WILL RETURN TO TLV AS ISR972 ON SATURDAYS AT 22:30.
