Opinions On Javelin Biz Jet

Thu Aug 04, 2005 12:52 pm

anybody have any thoughts? i've been reading about it for about 6 months now and got the chance to see the static display of the javelin at osh kosh this weekend. the salesman said they will be targeting operators interested in all the new and upcoming VLJ's. the top speed is mach .92 i believe, which isn't too shabby, but other than that, it doesn't seem to have much going for it. the only audience i can imagine it will sell to are wealthy folks who don't get to fly on fighter jets, so opt instead to purchase a 2 seat biz jet that lightly resembles one. how can one succeed in a market where the target audience is so minimal? maintenance costs may be low, but what if you're far from these areas? operational costs seem too high to justify flying one person. the majority of people aren't going to look to get typed in an a/c just so they can fly it w/ a coworker joining them on the flight to get more out of the trip than one pilot and one employee.

just curious what people think of this aircraft. i give it 1 1/2 years before they drop the program

I've talked with many of the people running this company. They're targetting the group of people that have a rediculus amount of money and want to have something they can go out and have fun in and go on day-trips with. It doesn't have the passenger capacity or baggage capacity to be in competition with most of the other light jets. To sum it up, this may give you a good idea of what they're after... the baggage compartment was designed to fit 2 sets of golf-clubs.

The design is pretty remarkable and they have a lot of heavy-weights in the industry behind the program. They already have deposits for more than 200 of the aircraft, with I believe the first one going to the president of Oracle.

I've also flown their simulator and let me tell you, this thing is a blast. It is not meant to be simply a transportation machine. It has the same thrust to weight ratio as an F-14A and is stressed for aerobatics. We're talking to ultimate in toys for grown-ups. Apparently they've had people interested in it come by and spend 15 minutes in the simulator with their VP of Flight Ops (great guy, btw...he's also their chief test pilot and demonstrator as well as an instructor at the national test pilot school, has thousands of hours in fighters) and by the end of the session, they have their checkbook out signing the dotted line.

They're also marketing it for a variety of military roles including a trainer, but the company is not large enough to take on that right now so they're mostly waiting until they have the civilian version certified and being produced before expanding their product line.

I have no doubt that they'll be successful, they have a unique product that caters to a niche that has a demand.

Any pics, or a website for this company?? I'm not familiar with them, but it seems interesting.

The company is Aviation Technology Group. The website is avtechgroup.com.

Apparently, the former Pres./CEO/Chairman (or something like that) of Cessna has come on board to lead the company as they attempt certification. At least that's what they told me at EAA Airventure.
Because getting there IS part of the fun!

Cool idea, probably not a huge demand, but if their development expenses are under control and they've already got 200 deposits, it should be a winner.

Hope the plane peforms better than their website, though...
