IFE On LH?

Thu Aug 04, 2005 5:43 pm

I've seen that LH has been introducing IFE on their long haul flights. Do you know if they are equipping their B747-400 with them? Have some of these aircrafts "updated" already?

IFE = inflight entertainment? Every LH longhaul aircraft has been equipped with a range audio and video facilities depending on aircraft type and travel class for a very long time.

If the question was for PTV-IFE in Y, the answer will be NO (AFAIK) !

In Y you´ll have over-head screens, access to looped radio and the window to look out  biggrin , which is okay and sufficient for me.

In C and F this is another story of course ...

You will also have access to some film on a mini-monitor on the top you best see with binoculars or better not see at all coz the films they show are 10 yrs + and probably not even available on blockbuster as they are just too bad to be shown anywhere  Silly - sometimes the monitor "shows" all night so that it gives an uncomfortable condition to the cabin...

Wasn't there some LH announcement about a revamp of longhaul LH Economy Class this fall, which could probably also include the future provision of PTV's in this travel class?

I heard that, too. But a revamp of LH's Y probably means bring the cabin to the status of SQ 1995 - these new Ricardo seats are so incredibly uncomfortable that your back hurts if you have to sit 2 hrs plus. I just travelled DEL-FRA: and if I hadn't been in Eco Row one with extra leg space (meaning half my body hanging in the air in the night), I would have never survived. When I flew FRA-SIN, I was first seated in the middle and almost started to cry, but luckily got a seat in the aisle later!

"Ricardo"? Never heard of them. Must be a new Italian seat designer - in this case, this should explain, why you were so uncomfortable, those seats must be like Italian cars: good looking, but defect every couple of days.  Wink Or were you thinking of "Recaro"? Big grin

I bet you would have stopped to cry as soon as one of the stern looking LH flight matrons, er, attendants would have straightened you out. Big grin You see, that's what many Germans like about LH: at the end of a trip to a far-flung exotic country, they get back on an LH plane and instantly feel like home.

Unfortunately, I am serious about the last sentence, this is one major selling point for LH in their home market, although it is hard to comprehend for me - I am a "Skyteam" guy for a reason.  Smile

About a third of the 744 fleet have their new Rockwell Collin IFE installed and there is no PTV in Y.

Lufthansa never would pull an aircraft simply for cabin upgrades. The Business class upgrade has been a long slow process as the cabin is upgraded during heavy maintenance.

As for customer service I have had nothing but good experiences with LH. Friendly crew, punctual departures and I have found FRA to be a good connection airport and MUC even better. The LH crews are extremely efficient but not all gooey fawning like on SQ, KE etc.

Here is a link that might be helpful...

There are also two other version of LH 744s.

Does anyone?

The reconfigured LH 744 have quick change capacity that allows them to change zone C (area between door 2 and 3) into three arrangements, from all J, to half J / half Y, to all Y during overnight layovers.

internal LH sources suggest that the airline will revamp its First and Eco products with the introduction of the A380. if this will include PTVs in Eco is anyone's guess.

There were several A330s on lease (ex SN/LX) and used for north american routes that had PTVs in Y and better seat pitch, but now that LH has its own aircraft they have left the fleet. You may have seen reference to one of these.

Recently flew IAD-FRA on a 744, I paid full fare for the ticket a day before the flight, and all that was available, even at full fare, was economy. To make things worse, I was in row 58. I usually do United when flying to FRA, but they're generally quite full flights. The inflight "experience" was pretty bad. The food was ok, pretty crummy though, the F/A's are really not friendly, the seats are quite worn down, and there is no IFE besides shaky CRT monitors every dozen or so rows. In fact, the quality of the CRT's was so bad, that I couldn't read the text on the screen unless I went right up to it.

That said, the 744 is a wonderful aircraft, LH just needs to offer more. I have flown the same flight a few times in business, and the whole product is so much better.

Some carriers have pulled aircraft for upgrades. TG is doing a very fast conversion to new livery and on board product. I can't see how they are not at least making the lighter maintenance times longer in order to re spray.
